Richard Gebhart Family Vacation in Belize begins next week!
SIGN UP NOW FOR SPRING RAFTING/FLY FISHING TRIPS ON THE UPPER SAC FOR EARLY MAY FLY FISHING WILL BE PERFECT THIS SEASON!! LOWER SAC CADDIS HATCHES WILL ALSO BE EPIC.
(Up at 4am before my guide trip to bring this story, I do it because I love it)!
On the Upper Sac, life is grand right now! On sunny days the fishing is good in the early mornings until 2pm then it slows down drastically. I have been nymphing with red and black Copper John’s, also Golden Stones are working in size 12 & 14. On cloudy days the fishing is great all day!! The dry fly fishing has been awesome on rainy overcast days. I have seen Mayflies, caddis and stones of different sizes and colors coming out daily. So get on your horse and plan a trip to Dunsmuir or Mt Shasta and get out on the Upper Sac because things are happening! Jack Trout
On April 12th 2007, the rains fell from the skies and Jack Taylor called me early to ask if we were even going out? I said with passion, “of course were going out, days like these are the best on the Upper Sac”!
The first run we took from sims proved to be a good one as Jack hooked into a beautiful trout within minutes. What a lunker!! This trout was as old as Jack Nicholson!
My invention to use the U SAC-CLAW to hold the raft onto willows has proved to be a great one! It has served its purpose again and again. I can’t use an anchor, the rapids are too dangerous. It could really hurt someone. That’s what I love about my trip and pioneering an adventure, it has been a real learning experience. Thanks Upper Sac Raft Fly Fishing Trip, it gets better every year as my knowledge grows!
David then hooked into a trout a little further down.
Nice trout Marlin Perkins!
Just in case you were thinking of doing this trip on your own, better think again! Stuck in the middle with you–run, will take you down! I am a licensed rafting guide for class 4 rapids. (kids don’t try this at home). Where we catch fish is totally different from where you will flip your flotation device if you try this trip on your own.
(We learned that from an outfitter from Redding with no rafting experience or certifications who tried to raft and fish the Upper Sac and I was finding all his gear for a week)!
“This message has been brought to you by; People can’t breath under-water foundation”. Thank you!
A little further down we started seeing trout rise everywhere. I looked forward as a Green Drake flew right by my face! I then saw Green Drakes everywhere in the misty air that coated my lungs with freshness. I have learned that Green Drakes and the trout that live in the Upper Sac are one together. These trout go nuts for them and on low water years like this one, any over cast day you should be packing your bags and heading for the Upper Sac!
I switched to a size 12 Parachute Adams on the surface and Jack Taylor caught three fish in a row!
It was so great to see action like we were in Montana, but that day we were the only ones on the river! (Try that in Montana)!
Anywhere you saw foam bubbles you would see rising trout taking Green Drakes!
Rock-a-bye Baby! One kiss and we set it free!
Further down, Jack was casting his fly along the current that ran along the edges of the river and bam! A trout nailed his fly like an intern in Government. It was an awesome sight to see and Jack was so excited as the trout took us where ever he wanted to go!
What a beauty! Like a Leopard Shark! JACK TAYLOR YOU’RE MY SIZZLER OF THE WEEK AWARD WINNER!! CONGRATULATIONS SIZZLER!! JACK TAYLOR BOUGHT LAND UP IN MT SHASTA AND PLANS TO RETIRE HERE SOMEDAY! I CAN’T THINK OF A BETTER NEIGHBOR THAN JACK TAYLOR!!(Move where the water is now people)!
Further down David was floating his dry next to this lovely wall, the classic location we all dream about when casting or thinking about dry fly fishing and wham! Fish on brother!
David what an epic tale we had together! Both of you, thank you for a classic day on the Upper Sac, I know it won’t be our last! Thanks for dinner at Billy Goats in Mt Shasta!! jt
A week before Eric and I had another epic day with almost 40 takes by trout!
This one fought hard.
What a beauty, this trout belongs on the cover of Vogue Magazine!
Nice guy, nice trout!
That day everytime Eric would look away he would get a bite! He still landed over 20 trout but it was incredible the amount of trout feeding that was going on.
Red Copper John is working well right now!
Howdy folks! Just wanted to say hello to all my firends and customers out there. To all my family, especially to my dear friends and guides in Chile, Argentina and Belize! I LOVE YOU MAN!!! Jack Trout (I’ll be back soon).
Catching trout out of my raft is a hoot!
Splashing around, jumps and leaps only add to the excitement.
This year has been an exceptional size year for trout on the Upper Sac.
Beautiful runs perfect for drifting a fly.
A little further down near Slate Creek just above White Horse Falls, Eric hooked into another screamer!
Thanks for a great day on the river– Upper Sac!
Dave Earl the music man came a calling www.davearl.com
He hooked two fish within 3 minutes of starting our adventure together! It was sunny that day and warm, so the dress was light, but the fishing was good.
Nice trout Dave.
Murf’s 76 Run!
Just wanted to say hello to all the girls out there! I will be coming soon to a theatre near you!
Fishing along the edges of whitewater is a fantastic place to catch a trout.
Good drifts with the line mended upstream is a must on any river we guide.
Down by McCardle Flats, the edges of rock walls that are inaccessible from shore prove to be good pickens for me and my customers.
Fun day with Dave Earl out on the Upper Sac! Thanks Dave.
Rhino Bend is a flipper, better take it far left heading in!
Over in Argentina, the girls are getting ready for another day with Martin and Dereo.
One of our favorite restaurants is Vattos in El Bolson Argentina!
I love their pasta dishes.
Their creamed pepper steak was so delicious too!
Pancho enjoyed the dessert for sure! I wanted to thank Pancho for a great season together. We’ve come a long way together and every year he has had things more organized and we all appreciate it! Adding Gaston for all the driving and having a fulltime kitchen staff in region Yelcho was brilliant! Thanks from all of us! Jack Trout
Yummy desserts when you come on our trips through Patagonia Argentina & Chile!
Back on the Rio Petrohue, Pancho’s home river, he nets a lunker brown trout for another customer!
Off a side channel on the Rio Petrohue, Pancho nets another prize. This steelhead put up an enormous fight! The steelhead and salmon are now running in most rivers in Chile!
Back over in Argentina, the troops go on a horseback ride through the Rio Manso and things get a little exciting!
Bariloche at 10pm is amazing! Folks are just getting ready to eat dinner and the places to eat are full!
Chocolate Easter Eggs at the Mamuschka Chocolate Cafe, is always an event to see!
The best chocolate award goes to Rapa Nui!
My good friends in Bariloche Argentina, Geraldo and Martin as we drank some coffee and talked about politics in the world. I felt a little sick that night, I caught a two day bug. I think it was from using the computers in the internet cafes. I assure you it wasn’t the food! Many days on the road could be a factor– No hooters for sure– I quit that!
Geraldo is so proud of his American made van! Look at that pride folks as he drives down Avenue Mitre with that grin on his face! What a great dude that I love to hang out with when I’m in Bariloche Argentina. Geraldo has some great cabins that he rents out for summer vacationing or skiing in the winter. Call me for information 530-926-4540. Geraldo needs his own Reality TV Show. He’s a lot funnier than our North American Geraldo and heart factor is no comparision!
Chao Geraldo! I’ll be back in December and we can talk more girls, politics and food!
After I left them at 11pm, I headed to my favorite cafe for cakes and coffees, La Providencia Cafe. They have the best stuff to cure that sweet tooth of mine.
The atmosphere is always so great and the food–Divine Intervention!!
Words and photos can’t describe…
I could eat there everday of my life and the prices are so right!
Thank you La Providencia Cafe for making my dreams come true! What a model for anyone starting a pastry cafe anywhere in the world. This place rocks Sizzlers!! “I be back”! As my Governator says! Right on Arnie Schwarzen-Sizzler!!
Martin and Jack Trout on the Rio Limay in Argentina! I can’t wait to be back in South America for the 2008 season. I will have new boats, new cars and great adventures for all of you out there! But for now stay tuned for my adventures in Northern California and Belize, Central America! MANY RIVERS TO YOU, JACK TROUT
GET READY FOR BELIZE, SIZZLERS! jt
Hope to see you down in Belize this season! Call me for information 530-926-4540

EMAILS FROM YOU:
Jack, I talked to my buddy and we will do this. We have to consider timing. I am off to Europe for a couple of weeks tomorrow and I am committed for the second half of May and he has limited availability for the first half. Maybe early June makes sense. Will call to coordinate dates upon my return.
Will Middleton
Hi Jack – we will see you on Thursday morning, we are looking forward to it.
Will it be possible to purchase our fishing licenses there (we are running out of time here);..
Also, anything special we should wear?
Regards, Bruce Bell
Jack, I just mailed some Crazy Charlie variations, some Christmas
Island Charlies, and a big and little Deciever in case you want to
chase a snapper or barracuda. Strip like mad for the cuda. Have a
great trip. Mike Foster
Hi Jack…Thanks for your quick reply re: whether to have my brother and his son fly into Arcata or Redding…I just made reservations for them into Redding. If we end up fishing closer to the coast, so be it. This way the issue is resolved and we know that they are scheduled to arrive in Redding on Sun. Oct. 21 at 4:45 PM.
I hope you have an enjoyable trip to Belize…
Bill Mansfield
Hey Jack,
cool to hear some news from you, makes me happy.
Nope, havent been involved in that 😉
I met some reaaallly good people from California down here in MX – I’ m kinda thinking about leaving my flat in Germany for at least half year to fulfil another dream of mine – getting a pilot’s licence for small private plains. Whatcha think about that?
Until now I always considered Australia as a good country to obtain it – the last weeks I thought about Canada – or – maybe even better Argentina.
The thing is, that I sometimes get a bit tired of the 12 – 18 hours rides down here, you know what I talk about…
And then, I would love to be in Argentina again, and, it would be like a dream to be able to get people (friends / tourists) into the plane and just go some 1000 kilometers… 😉
I am right now down here in Oaxaca / Mexico, pretty much in the south, where there were big riots in the last year, actually alot of people died…
The city is very beautiful, colonial style.
Where you at right now?
We definitely have to meet up again some day sizzler!
Sasacha from Budapest Hungry
HI JACK TROUT, I just looked at the great pics of some of your fishng on the Trinity and my pulse rate went up about 25 beats per min. Looks great and Brother Bill and my son Dan are looking forward to trying our luck this fall with you. Notmuch else at this time but I am sure Bill will be in contact with you in the near future. Thanks for the nice pics and the stories. Jack Mansfield in Waunakee Wisconsin.

Hi Jack,
Hope that you are doing well. It sure looks like you are enjoying your
life. You have guided me a few times in the past down the Klamouth and the
last time was with my brother Peter. You may remember me. I am from San
Francisco. Left you a voice mail yesterday regarding a possible float down
the Klamouth again with my girlfriend on the 12th of May. She is a novice
so you would have to teach her but as you know, I am pretty skilled and
will not have to pay much attention to me. First, do you have the time and
second, do you think the Klamouth will be fishing well that weekend.

Jack:
While I enjoyed reading about your adventures and seeing your photos of Argentina and Chile, the write-up about your first float down the Upper Sac really got me stoked! I look forward to our annual event on the Upper Sac with great anticipation. I booked my flight and I am already to go. Look forward to fishing with you on Friday, 5/25 and Saturday 5/26. Can¢â¡Át wait! Please save some fish for us.
All the best
Seth Nodelman
Great Adventures Jack!! I especially liked the photo of that line badly
in need of mending!!!
I broke my 2 weight at lake Solano but Sage fixed it and its back
already. My shoulder is feelin pretty good now.
When I see yer great weblog I think of the Muddy Waters song “I live
the life I love and I love the Life I live” Keep livin’ LARGE my
friend!!!

Priceless! Keep it coming!

Well, the Ninth circuit upheld Judge Redden¡¯s knock-down of the Fed¡¯s (National Marine Fisheries Service) ridiculous contention that dams on the Columbia were authorized by Congress before the Endangered Species Act standards were set and, therefore, the dams should be considered part of the baseline from which current environmental conditions (harmful to fish) should be measured. Yea for the good guys!! Maybe we¡¯ll get rid of a few of those dams yet!

Jack:
I definitely plan to get together with you this season…hopefully with my buddy, Mike.
We just got back from our annual spring trip to Montana, which was great. Now it is off to NY to visit our son and his family. Then we need to complete the current phase of our home remodel before I can think much about the fun of getting on the stream with you.
Looking forward to that day.
