TRINITY RIVER SALMON TRIPS START NOW!

After the rain storm on June 26th, snow fell and covered Mount Shasta.

 Mount Shasta is one great place to visit or live on planet Earth. This past season in South America I really missed this place and it is so great to be back on my home rivers. We got a dealt a real dry season, one of the lowest water years I have ever seen but I still have

Back a few weeks, I guided Chuck and brother Don on the Upper Sac extravaganza!

 All day we hooked great trout and the weather was perfect, it’s always great to see the Persyn’s together and happily hooking trout.

Fish on Chuck! Looks to be a great fish…. This is a good trip for those of you that don’t want to do a “death march” wading the rivers. Chuck look forward to seeing you and the family in the fall.

 Don nice trout!  Thanks again for coming up with your brother for over 10 years, myself and the community really appreciate it.

 Soon after Greg & Jan Skipitis from Redding came up again and fished with me on the Upper Sac.

 Jan hooked up right away and it looked as though it would be a good fishing day. Thanks again for coming up!  jt ct

Mid June hit and Dave Stonich from Livermore came up with his friend John Boyle from Grass Valley.

 What a beauty Dave! I like all those leopard marks the Upper Sac trout is so famous for, kind of a gold colored trout.

 Jordan & Lou Hixson from the Bay Area on the Upper McCloud River, a very special place in Northern California.

 Nice trout Jordan, on your first day out fly fishing! Hope to see you in the fall with Lou.

 With the dry conditions I have seen more than usual amounts of rattle snakes on the McCloud River this year. 2 near the dam and 2 near Ah Di Nah and Nature Conservancy. Please do not kill them, they keep the mice populations down, we are lucky we don’t  have mice infestations like other countries. Let’s keep it that way, just carry a long stick and poke along ahead on the trail. They’ll let you know they are around.

 McCloud River is a favorite place of anyone who likes to catch & release trout on a fly rod.

 Greg Takata our past client who went to Chile with us in 2008 is back and we are fishing on the McCloud River.

 Now that’s a nice prize for any angler.

 Sweet! I love the McCloud River Rainbow, they should always be protected and honored since countries like Chile, Argentina, New Zealand and Australia first got there rainbow trout from the McCloud River in the 1880’s and continued on until about 1915. Brown Trout were introduced all over the world from Germany and Loch Levan, Scotland. The McCloud River Rainbow, the most prolific, well traveled trout the world has ever known. The Trout that launched a thousand ships! jt

 Salmon Fly Hatch –  These bugs are great to imitate and trout love them.

 We still have openings for July and August, give us a call and we can go over details.

 One day Carola and I drove up the Siskiyou Lake Road to Gumboot Lake to take a nice hike and explore our many resources we have here in Siskiyou County. It’s so easy to drive here and the road is fully paved and a worth while must see while visiting in the Mount Shasta area.

 After we walked the entire circumference of the lake we drove on the same road we were on before to drive up to the very top and witness an amazing view of some 50 to 70 away!

 Off  in the distance we could see the Trinity alps, the Scott Mountains and the Marble Mountains. This is one heck of a trip folks!

 Then view coming down from the Castella Road near Amaratti’s Gas station and beer hut is incredible, literally our version of  Yosemite and Half Dome.  Full on, fist full of granite rock towering in front of your eyes as you make this incredible California forest jeep journey. (All on pavement)

 Dennis lives in Weed with his wife Lettie, he called for a trip out on the Upper Sac and boy did this guy catch some nice trout.

 A little further down rolling on the river, we hook this lovely trout on a very small zebra midge size 20.

And another lovely trout that could do the Spock finger thing with his dorsal fin… (For all you Star Trek fans)

 Dennis had so much fun he scheduled another trip for he and his daughter and grandson for later on in the month. There’s my dog Kobe Beef Butt… Dennis and Lettie see you in the fall for steelhead fishing.

 Patrick came up with his mom Susan from Southern Cal and enjoyed their 3 day trip on 3 different river locations where Patrick learned how to fly fish and caught & released many trout.

 Now that’s a whopper for s first timer, way to Patrick!

 Now that’s a broken rod! I mean if you’re going to do it, a 7 piece rod is always better than a 2 piece. No worries under guarantee, …. happens. (I think Native Americans netted salmon with rigs like that)

 What a native beauty caught in the town of Dunsmuir! Love those red stripes, this trout is like a candy apple red Corvette.

 That’ll work Jim, thanks for coming up had a great time as usual.

 The Klamath River needs a scrubbing this river is full of blue-green algae, think about how healthy this river could be if it wasn’t suffocating on it’s own toxic growth due to lack of natural flows and 4 worthless dams that don’t generate much power.

 Small hatchery trout is always nice to catch on the annual salmon fly hatch on the Klamath River.

 Tom Kennedy of Santa Rosa caught this huge adult wild steelhead on a big dry fly on the Klamath River during that rain storm period in Northern California around June 25th. Sure could use another big rain storm, it drove flows up on the Upper Sac to 950 CFS. That was unprecedented for June after the normal snow melt had come and gone a month or two before. loved it, as it re-booted all the North State rivers and cooled the air, made the trout warm and fuzzy too.

 This trout was hard to land, it went into Tom’s backing 4 times and ran as much as 40 yards away from us! This shows the health of the Klamath should be paramount when you consider that adult wild steelhead are in the river as early June. Maybe they are there year around and just need our helping hand of a good scrubbing flow that would turn over rocks and crush those berry bushes that are cementing the edges of the river thus creating an unhealthy environment because there’s no huge gravel bars where spawning is getting easier instead of harder. The river needs to be free again and flow naturally to the ocean, at least we should see because the river mid summer is unacceptable with the levels of disgusting algae. We would have so many more of these incredible adult steelhead if we just let it flow. Nice steelhead trout Tom, maybe the biggest wild trout caught on a dry fly this season in the North State!

 After that storm re-booted the Upper Sacramento River to a flow that I knew was perfect for floating the middle section of the Upper Sac.

 Boy did we catch some nice trout that day! Thanks Mike and Robin.

 Then Denise gets in on the action on her first time out ever fly fishing. We’re like the Oakland A’s folks, good farm team with good talent coming up the ranks, stay in first place most years! Love those Giants too!

 Now that’s what I’m talking about Sizzlers! Way to tear it up on your first day out Denise. Take care and say hi to Pops and mom for me.

Last week Carola and me took 2nd place in the Mount Shasta parade, we figured after being in business for over 20 years in Mount Shasta we wanted to celebrate by having a float in the parade.

With Cascade Cat, the North State’s favorite feline and Mtshasta.com mascot.

 We’re ready and armed with huge trout and 2 big baskets full of candy for the kids!

 I brought out my dad’s Bamboo fly rod from the 1940’s, it’s the sweetest 4 wt fly rod you’ve ever casted.

 2nd place with 30 other floats entered, not bad. Carola and I are  just having fun together with all of you and that’s all that counts, we love Mount Shasta and want to give back to this great community!

Charles “Swede” Risberg  – Black Sox Scandal – Buried in Mount Shasta Cementery

• Birth: Oct. 13, 1894 Death: Oct. 13, 1975 Major League Baseball Player. Born in San Francisco, California, he was a shortstop making his debut with the Chicago White Sox on April 11, 1917. For four seasons, he played with the Chicago White Sox (1917-20), was a member of the White Sox World Series Championship team and played in the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds. In 1921, he was banned from professional baseball for his role in helping to convince some of his teammates to go along with the scheme in the 1919 Black Sox Scandal conspiracy. He ended his career with a record of 394 hits, 196 runs scored, 6 homeruns, 175 runs batted in and a .243 batting average. He died at age 81 in Red Bluff, California, and was the last living Black Sox player.
