Hope you all had a great holiday and enjoyed your 2014 New Years where ever you were!

Right after Christmas it was so cold up on the Klamath River that two of my clients got out of the car and it was 17 degrees, they opted to go back out in the spring when conditions were better and I went back to Mount Shasta on a rare-off-Saturday to spend time with Carola at the house and tinker around my shop working on things like staying warm and the occasional glance at a bowl game. Some people love the cold, some people like fishing in the sun, I guess that’s why they have menus in restaurants.

This sure has been great for us this past holiday as this was Carola’s first Christmas ever in the USA and there we were all ready to head to Chile when her green card didn’t arrive until almost Christmas. Not wanting to take a chance we postponed our tickets to leave for Chile until after January this year. We did’t want to be part of any stories about getting stuck or separated because Carola didn’t have her card in hand but had a piece of paper, that was too scary for us. So we would like to apologize to any of our clientele who we didn’t guide ourselves, but we know you were happy and in good hands with our staff of guides Edgar & Mattias who are holding down the fort in Chile before we get there. I just think it’s incredible that we are coming up on our 4 year wedding anniversary and we were still dealing with this. Well it’s all done for now, they gave her 1o years folks so we celebrated that and have moved on.

I haven’t guided the winter in the USA in a long time so it’s great to be out there and I love the weather we are getting now as the rains are here!! Huge rain storm last night in Shasta and all Northern California steelhead rivers. LOTS and Lots of steelhead are in the rivers.

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA FLY FISHING INFORMATION

 Brandon enjoyed his first time ever out fly fishing on the Klamath River and what a great day indeed, 8 steelhead is not a bad day.

The strength of a wild steehead ripping out line from your fly reel can warm the soul in the winter time and the  music heard will bring in the rain.

The steelhead prize of the Klamath River, a wild hen gobbling up coho salmon eggs for breakfast and yet there was a hook.

 We saw coho spawning in the river then right after that a hook up on a steelhead. This is why it is so important this time of year to wear waders for heat and not wade the rivers, especially where you see signs of redds or spawning endangered coho.

(Shall I say it again..) Truth is, rivers are extremely low for the coho spawn, this year people can access areas that are usually safe havens for cohos, keep this in mind if you have to wade.

 These steelhead stay in the upper river for a few weeks, then they start turning color and looking like the hillsides that surrounds us.

 Every steelhead is like another log on the fire and the stove gets hotter folks! There’s something about winter, the coffee tastes better, a hot tub is better and perhaps a huge dinner after you get off the river at a local north state restaurant is better and we thank you.

 I always like to think that the steelhead aren’t as big on the average as steelhead running on the Trinity, but on the Klamath you get the numbers and this usually makes the drive worthwhile.

 I know Clint and Noah from Georgia and Santa Barbara were really enjoying their time out on the Klamath river.

 Just a great day out fly fishing and both days we had one other boat with one angler fishing, perfect conditions and hungry migrating trout after about 11 am.

Fish on and the temps are ideal, about 47 degrees.

 We like to cook meats out on the river and create things, then maybe if you brought that bottle of special red wine you could have a nice hot stream side lunch out there. I’ll watch you drink it and clean up everything when we finish.

Noah’s first steelhead ever! He was one of the funniest clients I’ve had in a while. A laugh a second with these two and I sure hope they come back soon.

 This was the crazy jumping go around the boat and we do donuts steelhead! A lot of  fun chasing these critters down, but don’t be bummed if he gets off, they’ve had to outrun – Orca’s, Great White’s, nets, illegal harvesting and poachers. They get off sometimes and we’ll catch another! 🙂 jt

 These steelhead sure do strange things to people, they start getting all excited and happy, sure makes winter fly fishing interesting.

I would think that would make the trout feel better when she’s released knowing she is loved…

 Lower Sacramento River was pretty good the other day, this river is getting some badly needed rain, so this huge rainstorm we got last night and is continuing right now will be great for fishing and water levels.

 We caught some great trout that day out on the Lower Sacramento river,  you might think of fishing here now.

 Back at the ranch, I’m painting eggs to make them look more realistic. Carola with her sinful colors paint these eggs up just right.

We are 2 months out from our trip to Patagonia and already received fantastic service from Jack Trout. My family and I went down to Pucon in the Lake District of Chile this November and it was a given that we would dedicate some time to do some fly fishing. Once we got in touch with Jack Trout (found via Google) and his wife Carola, we didn’t need to look any further. Both of them were absolutely incredible and put so much time and effort into our planning

The trip itself was wonderful. My family (wife and two teen age boys) had such a great day on the Rio Rahua and all caught big, beautiful browns and rainbows. The guides, Edgar and Esteban, were excellent guides with great senses of humor. My kids had such a fun time with Esteban. These guys worked really hard and served us a wonderful stream side lunch with salmon, beer and wine. Excellent day.

Jack and Carola were also more than happy to assist us with our other plans. Pucon is known as the adventure capital of Chile’s Lake District and we were looking to also do a volcano hike, horseback riding and zip lining. They put us in touch with their pal Willy Hatcher at Sol y Nieve Pucon Adventures who I would also recommend to anyone (see my separate review about them).

All in all, Jack Trout runs a top notch operation and I wish more businesses would show the same level of service to their customers that we experienced with Jack, Carola and their guides. Next time we hope to fish with Jack out near Mt. Shasta.

We just return from fishing out of Hopkins, Belize and my friend and I each landed our first permit on days 1 and 2 of our trip. Jack set us up with the best guide in Hopkins (or possibly anywhere) – Lincoln Westby. Jack got to know our needs based on our experience (it was our 4th trip to Belize) and matched us with a perfect guide. We also appreciate his recommendation to stay in Hopkins Village and his advice with all other logistics and entertainment suggestions during our stay. We would definitely recommend using Jack to organize fishing or any other activities in Belize. There are lots of options and Jack knows the best of the best.

Last year I went solo. This year I brought my wife and we had a wonderful, fun-filled all around fishing, touring, dining and shopping experience! Jack and Carola attended to all,of the endless details from excellent lodging and dining reservations, to booking the most knowledgeable and professional local fishing guides, to dealing with border crossing challenges between Chile and Argentina (of which there are many potential land mines,) to filling us in on endless interesting cultural, historical and localized highlights of our travels. Their Toyota was rugged but also very comfortable for long drives too. I can’t praise them enough for their commitment to excellent services with a smile for their clients and authentic friendliness and caring spirits. They’re the greatest! We look forward to our next adventure with them?…

“Jack and Carola Trout are the ne plus ultra of Chilean fishing hosts”

I have flyfished Chile 12 out of the last 13 years, always in Feb or March to miss the biting black flies and school kid crowds. In that time I have had probably 40 different guides in all kinds of boats. This was the first year I wanted to fish both in Chile and in Argentina. I had fished with Jack and Carola one time previous, but just in the Los Lagos area of Chile, headquartered in Pucon, a lovely town. Trout put together a ten day adventure, 5 days each country and made all local arrangements, found places to safely keep his boat at night, provided equipment and instruction for my wife. He and Carola created a fabulous, memorable trip. Lunches on the rivers were spectacular. Their patience and kindness with a learning fly fisherwoman much appreciated. Important to note here, the Argentine web site which one must navigate from home before your trip is not at all clear even to someone who has to speak spanish every day (we live in Tucson). It would have been VERY EASY to have goofed up the Argentinian Reciprocity Fee section of their website and to have been turned away at the border. Carola and Jack took care of all that for us. Carola knows everyone at the border and is friendly with the folks you must interact with who speak a dialect. Jack supplies equipment to the guards so they love him. On crowded days you would have to wait in line outside in the cold, rain, and wind, but not if you are with Jack and Carola. There is no cable, no internet, just a wooden building with a fireplace and you could literally spend a half day there if you were behind a tour bus crossing, with only two guards working. The Argeninians just don’t care. Trout cares. The hotel they arranged in San Martin de los Andes was immaculate, friendly, and we made abundant use of the indoor pool, spa, steam, sauna, and internet. The Argentinian guides and drivers Trout arranged were punctual, skilled, and bilingual. Highest praise for them and to the Trouts for all they did for us. We will be back!

“Fabulous Experience”

I echo all of the great things my husband, Jon (Jon R) wrote and only want to add that in addition to the fun fishing, touring and dining experiences, I took one personal day and landed some trophy specimens that I was able to take home with me… a beautiful leather jacket, two leather purses and a sheepskin hat! The bargains in Argentina were awesome! I also picked up a lot of Spanish and my new favorite toast is:
Salud, amor,dinero, y el tiempo para disfrutar de ellos!!
