 Howdy folks! I’m here now in Chile with my wife Carola starting our 16th season outfitting and guiding in Chile. This is the Volcano Villarrica, located about one and half hours from our place near Los Lagos. No worries though it always seems to be smoking and if you like there’s a palma lift in the wonderful town of Pucon that takes you within 3 hours hike to the top. I climbed it with Matt & Uschi Hill from Mount Shasta in 2003 and looked into the devils throat. (Diablo Garganta)

Since 1995 we have been guiding and outfiting fly fisherman in Chile.

We have enjoyed lodging people, guiding them fly fishing and touring them around to all the coolest places in the 3 regions we cover in Chile at reasonable affordable non-package prices. From the Los Rios District near Valdivia on down through the Lakes District around Puerto Montt/ Puerto Varas and the talented guides who guide for me down in the famous Carretera Austral (route to the Patagonia) and Coyhaique, the Montana secion of Chile. We are proud that we are one of the only outfits that covers the entire fly fishing scene in Chile. We provide all the fly fishing gear here so you won’t need to bring any waders or boots if you don’t want. We have access to 4 sections of private drifts on wonderful fly fishing Chilean rivers.

Season starts November 1st until April 15th, 2011 

Fly fishing Chile is like a game of chess, you need to know where to be ahead of time based on what kind of winter Chile received. The weather can change at anytime and so can water levels being that no river I guide on has a dam. You need to know where to be when and where not to be why. Over my many seasons of guiding in all three regions I feel I learned this by trial and error and now I guide folks regionally instead of on a couple of rivers. Being at the best place for my client to have successful fly fishing is what I think outfitting in Chile is all about. With my years of experience and the help of my Chilean wife behind the scenes we will always put our valued clients in pole position when it comes to a great Chilean experience. The best Fly fishing, culture and food is our goal and our commitment  to you.

This has been a pretty average winter in Chile, unlike last year where we received so much rains all the rivers were high all season. I didn’t guide on the Rio Petrohue until late March due to so much runoff in the drainages to into Todo Los Santos. If I was planning a trip to Chile or Argentina I would look towards more earlier than March/April.

Last year was the polar opposite. We have already had many more sunny days than last year at this time.

 Back in Mount Shasta, California client Jim Puelsi has another hook-up with guide Isaac Roman!

 

My guide Isaac Roman will be guiding folks on the Klamath & Lower Sac this winter season. Here’s an email I received a few weeks back.

 

Jack,

Isaac was awesome. What a delightful young man. His enthusiasm, his knowledge, his service was

excellent. 

Thirty years ago (now 47) I was a fishing fanatic. But over time I lost touch with the sweet science. After fishing with Isaac the feeling came back and I am rededicating myself to the sport. 

We had an excellent day caught some great steel head and I fought a 20 pound plus salmon while wading that was lost after a historical twenty five minute fight.    

I would have fished with Isaac all week, if I could have made the time.  I will be back this winter and spring with family, friends and clients and believe me Jack Trout will be the guide service.

Hi Jack

Had a great day fishing with Isaac.  Weather held off for us as it rained all the way up the valley and stopped at about Weed.  Had a few spits on the river and the rain started as we were getting out.

We each landed 2 or 3 and Eric hooked into a big one early on and fought him all the way to the boat.  Slipped the hook as we got the net out.  Isaac estimated 6 or 7 lbs and looked to be in the 22-24 inch range.  Nice fish!

After lunch – a good one! – Susan hooked into a really big one that took off upstream.  Proceeded to go through all the line and half the backing.  Jumped a couple of times and appeared to be in the 30inch range – 10 lb or so. Broke the tippet I think – or maybe came downstream enuf to slip the hook.  Hard to tell at that distance.  Great fish and got all the hearts pounding.

Enjoyed being with Isaac.  Very personable and knowledgable of the river, boat and gear.  Your trade is in good hands!

Best news of the day was when he told us Carola’s visa paperwork was approved.  Trust she will do well at the interview and we look forward to seeing both of you in the spring.

 Kobe Beef? Well Kobe Beef scored big time as he hangs out in a pet resort for the winter in Patterson, California. A former client contacted us and we traded a few trips for next season. Perfect! Soon I’ll have some pictures of Kobe Beef at a lake socializing with other mutts.

We all like happy endings!!  This dog would of gone to the pound otherwise if I didn’t take him on my guide trips this past season. Now he can hang out every summer up in Shasta and we found him a winter home!! Classic, it just took a little effort and time but it was worth it!

 One of my last raft floats on the Upper Sac was a fun one as we hooked many in the Cougar Canyon!

 The perfect drift from the boat seems to solve most of worlds problems, so I am told. Anytime out on the water is time not deducted from your miles on Earth. For me there’s just something about floating on a river. The feeling of the smooth ride, the sound of the oars hitting the water and the miracle glide back up to take another run is like magic to me. Looking out and seeing a Disney scene of green trees and the lush river bank that produces a slow meandering current with an obvious feeding lye and the classic over hanging branch of a tree. You know the one I mean, if you know about the float in a guides drift boat.

 

 Before I left Shasta I encountered this garbage left by the Union Pacific Railroad. It was the metal ties they had just replaced on the tracks. This junk will eventually erode into the Upper Sacramento River.  I understand it is on their property, but in the spring I would like to see all these places cleaned up. It’s time people, we have more pride than that. I look forward to taking the folks from Union Pacific down the river in spring of 2011.  I look forward to a new commitment and era from the Union Pacific Railroad.

 Now here’s a fun story! Bob Quillin my client who I guided in Chile in 2004, with me on my last float before I finally go see Carola in Chile!!! You think I wasn’t in rare form?! Sporting his SF Giants hat and a big trout on the Upper Sacramento River.

 We had a great lunch and talked highly about the San Francisco Giants chances of finally winning a world series in SF. He commented on how the East coast sports experts were on t.v. saying the Giants 0% chance of winning against the St. Louis Cards. It has been so great because Carola and I enjoyed all the games here in Chile as we upgraded our Dishtv and we have all the NFL too! (Hilarious here in remote Chile)

         

 For me this series was so important to my entire family on the year that my father Raymond passes, the San Francisco Giants finally win it all! Remember when the Texas Ranger’s ball hit the top of the homerun fence and bounced back into the field…That was my dad Raymond!

I knew he had a hand in this some how. I remember all those hours my dad listening to Giants ballgames on the radio in Portola, California. 

Dad, we did it! I love you!

 Bob, 0% chance you catch a trout through here!!

 That day we hooked so many trout, it was a hoot. But all the time in the back of my mind was my gal who was waiting for me to arrive Chile in a few days time.

 We mainly hooked trout on 2 nymphs, the beaded P.T. size 16 and the Micro Mayfly size 18. 

 Through here we switched to a Fox Poopah size 14 and nailed them.

 I love how the Upper Sac has so many of these nice hard fighting Rainbow Trout and Kamloops.  

 Down where the river hits Shasta Lake can be very rewarding being that it hardly gets fished.

 

 Bob again with his World Series Giants cap lands another, we hope next year we could play the NY Yankees in the World Series, that would be a dream for me to have the SF Giants meet the NY Yankees in a World Series. 

 Let’s go to Upper Falls on the McCloud River.

 Middle Falls is a cool place I usually hook some lunkers this time of year on the McCloud.

 Release all trout if possible in the most oxygenated water, it helps them recover faster.

 

 Lunkers was right! Bob caught so many nice trout it was a hook up festival!

 With fantastic spectacular views and lovely jurassic trout!

 

 Then bob hooked this 4 lber that I called a 5 lber and was crowned

 I lifted him gentle to take this photo of his beautiful colors, what a nice catch!

 Then of course we had to try Lower Falls on the McCloud River.

 Sweet !! I love these trout, I catch them here and in Chile and they were made in America! That looks very native to me with those colors and red stripe.

With that I would like to thanks all the folks I guided this past year!

If you think about how the year before was so dry and all the lakes were empty,  we were in a total drought stage in the State of California.

Then so much snows came to the Mount Shasta area and Shasta Lake went from the lowest level ever in recorded history to completely full.

It had only been completely full four times in the last 28 years. That would be like being in last place in your division in baseball and winning the World Series the next year and incredible turn of events that shouldn’t go un-noticed. I am very grateful of this because it allowed us to raft the Upper Sac our entire season and we hardly saw a sole. 

 Carola said when I arrived it was like the 34th miner of Chile! We had a nice dinner at this great Italian restaurant in Santiago and watched Giants win a game against the ST. Louis Cards in our hotel room.

 It was great to be with my wife again after a summer of blunders by my attorney who ended up returning our money due to his tarde mistakes on our case. Our case should of been expedited he was continually dragging his feet and shortly there after I took over and called immigration and explained how we both had lost our fathers over the summer and the history we had together in both countries. Ironically, as I check my messages a week later in the Dallas airport flying early to Chile, Carola’s case had been expedited and approved thanks to continued efforts on my own. So the greatest news of all is we’ll both be coming back in April to Mount Shasta.

 The restaurant even had a dessert called Copa Carola, I had to order that! Wow 2 desserts in one evening! Loved it.

 

 The next day we had an anti pasta and Carola sported her new Ted Fay Fly Shop hat. The SF Giants won the NLCS and advanced to the World Series!!

 When we got down to our place the on the banks of the Rio San Pedro everything looked so green and spring was here. The B&B looked great!

 Sign up and ready for another season, we’re ready and excited.

 Nothing better than to hang out with the women I love in her country. She’s my Ambassador and I’m her captain, we make a great team!

 Fishing season around this region on both rivers & lakes starts on November 15th, so as we watch people row their boats in anticipation of the start of a great fishing season. 

 I sat down with Carola and started playing songs I knew on my guitar since we couldn’t fly fish yet. It was a real pleasure and Carola always likes it. Maybe the best place I ever played! 

 Here we are in Valdivia Chile my favorite Chilean city. When you hear about Chile you hear so much about the port city of Puerto Montt, but  you should also visit Valdivia 2 1/2 hours to the north. Fantastic seafood markets in a clean tranquil environment with the Rio Calle Calle running right through town. We love this area of  Chile and suggest you make your flight from Santiago SCL  to Valdivia ZAL and we can lodge you & fish 4 rivers here then drive you down to Puerto Montt  where you can stay at our cabin on the banks of the Rio Maullin and fish 3 rivers near Puerto Montt & Puerto Varas Chile before flying out of Puerto Montt PMC.

 

 Valdivia Chile ~ Chile’s 2nd oldest city but number #1 in character, seafood restaurants, cleaniness, German breweries and best overall city in Chile.
