Howdy folks coming to you live from Patagonia Chile! We hope to see you and guide you down here for the 2010/2011 season. Everything is really greening up, leaves, trees and plants all getting ready to house the millions of insects that trout live and breathe, as they take to the surface of the river on their daily regeneration of life we call the food chain. 

 See Chile always had the same the insects we had in the Northern Hemisphere minus the trout. That’s when the U.S. Government and a man named Livingston Stone, a fisheries biologist in the late 1880’s starting shipping McCloud River Rainbow eggs back east on freight trains in coffee thermoses to later be shipped all over the United States and sold to the world. From Boston Harbor the first Mccloud Rainbow eggs made their way to Argentina to be released in the Rio Manso near Bariloche. Unfortunately the eggs never made it that far and they were dumped into the Rio Limay just outside of the town of Bariloche Argentina after a one month journey by stagecoach from Buenos Aires.

Lessons were learned from this experiment. One was the eggs shipped all died because trout or salmon eggs must be transplanted within 80 hours of extraction. The months they were to be shipped in the future needed to be planned better being that there was a lack of refridgeration and our fall months were leading into the Southern Hemisphere’s hottest months.

Only some of the minnows survived, but there was enough to propagate a new specie in a new  part of the world.  Also introduced to the Southern Hemisphere was the Pacific and Atlantic Salmon, which have become an important part of Chile’s exports and cuisine.

Pretty cool to be down here catching these McCloud trout and thinking about the history and the all the efforts that were made to bring them here to flourish. Think we’ll head out later on and catch some! A big sign of gratitude goes out to all those who got them down here for all of us to enjoy!

 A simpler life exists out here, one you would imagine your grand parents knew possible back in the 1920’s or 30’s. The senery of Chile reminds me of  Montana & California in many ways traveling up and down this tiny thin country. The country is only 220 miles wide in its widest spot, but over 3000 miles long encompassing every climate known to man in the world especially when you consider Antartica. 

 The rivers of the Patagonia are why the McCloud River Rainbows survived in Chile and Argentina.

 Glaciers ~ River ~ Lake ~ River ~ Lake ~ River ~ Ocean.

Like Alaska, Chile has many connecting rivers that lead to lakes and even more rivers that eventually drain into the ocean. This is why the trout easily made it into so many drainages in both Argentina & Chile, once introduced, you could say Mother Nature and instinct to survive took over from there.

 Many rivers over flow annually and leave these lagoonas that hold large trout, I’m saving this spot for you!

 

 Rivers that are undammed are best producers of fish that migrate in and out of the ocean. This is problem with the Klamath River in Northern California and many other rivers being sufficated by a lack of oxygen and river banks that never change their course. The healthiest rivers have nothing inbetween their source and the ocean. 

 Trees and plants reaching drunk and high for the sky finding their direction magnetically, not giving up until they touch the Southern Cross.

Early in the season I like to fish side channels if the rivers are high, but I am happy to annouce that we are heading into one of the best seasons I’ve ever seen for a spring in Chile. Last year at this time all rivers in Chile were on the high side, this year is a totally different story.

 

 We have some great waterfalls and hiking places to take you.

 

Everywhere we go in any direction there’s water.

 Soon after that we starting hooking up on trout often, we just needed a little more heat, some insects & birds to kick things off.

(Isn’t that always the case folks…)

 The gravel bar riffles are my personal favorite here some of our best catches occur.

 

 Sweet! Not big but it’s 78 degrees out, sunny & warm with no wind.

 Simple amazing is what I think and with no one around, all the better!

 

 Thanks to Carola, another award winning unique lunch on the river is served. I can’t think of a better place to stop and enjoy a great meal than on the side of a river. It gives you time to stop and think about the day, while embracing fantastic views and enjoying fine cuisine.

 The release of a fish is ok by me and it might be a whole lot larger when you return the next time.

 What a nice Atlantic Salmon Bill caught! I’ll show you how I know since it looks almost exactly like a steelhead..

 Floating this river is like cruising down and fishing on the Amazon in Brazil.

 

 This is one of favorite trees on any river I float in the world. One day it just might reach the other side and just like Chile, one day it might just close the river off from floating. So right now it still remains my favorite tree….

 

 We stop here to have a bathroom break and Bill hooks up on a nice brown!

 Then he hooked a 16″er and we knew we had another great day of fishing and catching under our wading belts.

 Fresh fish caught daily leads to incredible meals in the local restaurants of Valdivia Chile, my favorite Chilean city.

 

 That’s one of our favorites, Congrio fish with chucks of abalone and shrimps in a cream basil sauce. Oh boy is that good!

 

 I always like to order this creamed king crab dish in parmesan cheese and b aked to perfection with a ice cold brew from the local micro brew co.

 

 Valdivia Chile, if you miss this place and the rivers we guide near here, you missed the boat!  Start you trip in Valdivia, fish all of our local rivers nearby, then let us drive you down 2 hours and we can fish all the rivers around Puerto Montt & Puerto Varas Chile and you’ll see it all without seeing another sole on the river.
