Arrived Chile and the Volcano Lliama erupted! Though this is an active volcano, it has been a while since it last erupted
and there I was! This update isn’t going to have a lot of fishing in Chile. We have many folks inquiring on scenic tours also. I think it’s important to not be one dimensional and show everything we offer. So here’s my best shot to show you what we could do for you that want to fish some, see real Chilean culture and my favorite, local Chilean dishes.
An unbelieveable site to witness, what are the chances I would be driving down the road and see this Volcano erupt! I don’t think I have ever reached so fast for my camera ever. Volcano Lliama is located about 1 1/2 hours from the city of Temuco, Chile. This is located in the 9th region, 5 hours above Puerto Montt. I had planned to do a story on Parque de Conquillio for you, but because of this eruption, the park is now closed. No one was injured but I heard reports that some Gringos, (me) were asked to leave the park because we were getting too close for photos. (imagine that?)
Yea baby, up close and personal! Now it’s not hard for me to imagine Mt. Shasta some day erupting. It will happen some day in the future, and all the rivers are the drainages for our Mother Shasta Mountain. Thank you Volcan Lliama, for showing us a truly amazing event!!
Now Volcan Lliama is the most active volcano in South America.
Back home on the Trinity River in Northen California, guide Eric Wisefish, is getting our customers, Jeff Calder and his group into some great steelhead on a sunny winter day! (Guide Aaron Grabiel also there, guiding up a storm.)
As far as guides go, Eric Wisefish is one knowledgeable cool cat. Did you know that Eric grew up with Sean Malee, on the banks of the Trinity River in Junction City. Sean Malee is a well known doctor in Mt Shasta, who owns a prime spot on the Trinty River!

Nice steelhead Jeff Calder! A lot of the trout now are being caught on eggs and very small nymphs.

Tad Vail enjoyed his day on the Trinity River with his son and plans to return this spring. I hope to get he and his son on my raft on the Upper Sac for high adventures and fly fishing!

Finally the beach at Vina Del Mar! The weather was perfect, I suggest January or February in Chile for best beach weather! Best fishing is late February and March this year! Right now it’s too hot!

That’s right, wash that under-nourished horse. I had a great time in Vina Del Mar. Now it’s time to start heading south to visit my Chilean Mother Monica, who makes me authentic Chilean dishes, just to show off a little!

This dish is made with blended corn that is made into pastel liquid then baked. Beef is mixed slightly with onions and a few hard boiled eggs and olives underneath to make this one of my favorite all-time Chilean dishes!
This is Mote de Huesillo, a Mapuche favorite found all over Chile. Peaches and peach juice with rice crispies, make this a great dessert and healthy.
This cat was sick and coughing, living nearby, so I took it to the vet and got it vaccinated. Monica kept it and named it Bee Gees after her favorite music group…..Disco Monica..?
I took a drive back out to see Volcan Lliama and I could tell a lot of snow had melted from the previous eruption.
I looked over towards the town of Curacatin and saw to other volcanos obviously much older and seemly dormant, not as active as Volcan Lliama. Did you know Chile has 2006 volcanos?
I then headed to Saltos de Indio. (Indian Waterfalls).
What a plunge of water through a very narrow spout. Now that’s a force by nature!
Chile has so much water and natural beauty! This country must not dam its rivers for hydro-electric power for other countries like Argentina, Brazil & Venezuela. Let them figure out their power problems for themselves. To exploit such amazing natural resources is a crime in history and it must be stopped now! !PATAGONIA SIN REPRESAS! Once you go there you can never go back and these rivers are unique in the world!! Chile hear me, you have so many other ways to make money, look at the great accomplishments you have made in copper trade with the USA and China. You are # 1 in the world in pen-raised salmon export. Your wine sales are through the roof, as well as your summer export of fruit abroad. I have seen such economic growth in the 16 years I have been traveling and outfitting your wonderful country paradise. You are going to sell yourself short in the long run!! Chile is about recreation and natural resources, not computers, playstaion 2 & like every other North American country! Don’t you want to stay unique? I know you are a net export country now, the richest in South America. You must keep your tradition & customs and not become like our greedy Gringo country. Some things must remain sacred and always flowing.

It’s hard to get fishing pictures when you’re out on your own, but this update wasn’t going to be about that anyway. The next update is all about fly fishing, customers were guiding and more unique photos and scenes, I think you’ll love to see!!

Since Parque de Conguillio was closed, I then thought it would be fun to take a drive up high and check out places very near Argentina. As my altitude rose. I started seeing Araucaria Trees. They seemed so prehistoric and dinosaursous looking!
(Trout- That’s not a word!)
This dirt road stretches over a mountain pass that makes Tahoe seem flat.
As I looked over I could see the Volcan Longimay.
I finally made it over the mountains and I could see off in the distance, the little town of Longimay. We’re talking remote people! BFE…..
What a beautiful place!
I don’t think too many Gringos make it here man! Everyone was happy to see me and not concerned with who wins the Presidency. In other areas of Chile, that is not the case….. Our US Dollar is at an all-time low and I mean all-time low. For years it was around 550 to 750 pesos, to the dollar. Now barely breathing at 450 pesos, things are very expensive compared to the past…. Like 40% higher, that takes into account inflation also of course…. No comment!
I fished the Upper Bio Bio and did great!
This Mapuche was loading up for the winter. I imagine it is very harsh, to say the least.

On my way back to Temuco, I stopped and fished this spot and caught a few browns and rainbows.
The next day I headed for Pucon, one of favorite areas in Chile to party and hang.
There Volcan Villarrica rules from up high still smoking and waiting for it’s day to arrive again.
Ralf and his father from Austria were out for some great dining at the El Bosque Restaurant (The forest restaurant) in Pucon. Our friend Scott originally from Deluth, Minnesota owns this fine establishment. Back home, Ralf owns a paragliding business. He offers tandems and all instruction. Sushi at the El Bosque in Pucon is awesome!
Pucon is fun town ruled by women! This town for some reason attracts girls by the hundreds. Maybe it’s the beaches, the recreation or something in the water. But girls are here in pairs and by the hundreds!
(listen up single guys, this is the place you should of have been born! It’s not too late to be re-born!!)
I think this has to be Chile’s finest pair and so sweet to talk to on top of it! 🙂 I like Chilean girls with jet black hair and a smile that genuinely says; “Hello!”

At the August 23rd Project Update Meeting in Redding, Relicensing
Participants requested to be notified of upcoming field efforts. It is
our goal to send out a monthly e-mail with an attached summary of field
studies scheduled over the next month. Below is a summary table listing
all 34 studies and their field schedule for February 2008. There are
few studies anticipated to occur over the winter months, and a couple of
studies may go out in February, depending on weather; these study
descriptions have been highlighted in the table below.
The field schedule is subject to change, so if you would like to
participate in any of the upcoming studies, please provide as much
advance notice as possible. If you would like to participate, or if you
have any questions about the schedule, please contact me at (530)

Every thing is good, the trip was fun. it is snowing in Eureka first
time since 1992! it is gorgeous. the volcano is spectacular, that
is an awesome thing to witness. Hope every thing is going good for

Many thanks for your message – I will contact you when we have arranged
dates and flights.
We want to see some other parts of Chile we missed last time, such as the
wine area and the Atacama and finish with fishing for five days.
And we do wish to fish a different part each day, following in Hemingway’s
footsteps on the Maullin, and the other rivers you suggest. Float and fish
is great for us as we are the wrong side of 60 and 70 respectively, and
Robin is passionate about plants – we have here in our garden here in
Scotland lots of Chilean plants, e.g. embothrium, mitreria, eucryphia,
crinodendron, abutilon -we have quite a similar climate to the Chilean Lake
District. He loved floating down the river plant-spotting! Sadly our
Spanish is absolutely hopeless, so we need an English speaking guide if
possible
I think we went with Mario last time to the Trancura, certainly the outfit
was based in Pucon, and our guide was Catcho (!) and – can’t remember the
name of the other guide, they were both tremendous – but we booked it
through Abercrombie and Kent and think they charged a huge commission, so
that is why I am contacting you direct this time.
