Merry Christmas Folks From MOUNT SHASTA & Chile!
We have a very special place for you to visit if you need to escape.
The fly fishing in Chile is off the charts right now, and we have affordable prices for lodging, fly fishing and scenic tours as we are the closest place to visit from Santiago, Chile.
That’s what Ronald MacDonald did on his business trip to Santiago. He had a few extra days to visit Southern Chile and hopped on a bus to Los Lagos overnight and fished with us then flew back to Santiago from Valdivia.
We lodged him, fed him, outfitted him with gear & flies, fished him and then drove him to the airport, all for an affordable price.
Nice trout Ron! I guess you could say we are the Robin Hood of Fly fishing travel and you always have a happy meal when Carola’s cooking. (Ronald MacDonald loved our happy meals!)
Stone flies are out my friends!
A hot streamside lunch is always a treat on the river, with a nice view of the Andes, how can you go wrong Sizzlers!
My favorite part of this meal has to be the smoked ribs that just fall apart when you cut into them.
Chile and the many rivers that flow from the Andes Mountain Range undammed to the Pacific Ocean. Water the basis of life and why we exist, these rivers must always be protected as more and more are becoming designated catch & release.
What can I say, a perfect view on a perfect day in the most northern part of Patagonia.
The Rio Dios one of Chile’s finest places. (God’s River)
Streamers, dries and nymphs all work here.
After landing double digits in trout, Ronald MacDonald said he quit counting.. He must of felt like the Hamburgler!
What a spectacular day it was indeed!
Santa is on his way Sizzlers!
Ron just kept hooking these nice hard fighting trout using nymphs and an indicator.
He said that it was totally worth it to look us up and make the trip down from Santiago to fly fish in Southern Chile.
Breath taking views around every bend in every direction you look.
For sure over 20 hook ups that day, if not 30..
In this river the trout average about 14 inches.
A trout that originated from the McCloud River near Mount Shasta, California and made its way down into the Southern Hemisphere. Now the trout from Northern California are prospering here and offer the avid fly fishing angler or the beginner, a place to go in the cold winter months in Northen Hemisphere as we offer our services annually from November to April.
This was the last fish caught that day and Ron thanked us for a great time out on the water.
This is our B&B camp where we have folks stay when they visit us in Southern Chile.
Our pet hawk who hangs out with us and enjoys the views, as I feed him his daily bread.
Our next guest was from Portland Oregon, Dave and Joe Ferron, a dad and son who were spending a few days with us before we wrote them up an itinerary to go further south to the Isle of Chiloe and see the penguins and hangout one night in the capital city of Castro Chile and come back and have a few brews at the Colones Brewery on the old German Road to Frutillar. One of things we pride ourselves in is helping folks out with the years of experience and knowledge both Carola and I have in outfitting and guiding families in Chile.
Put on our waders, loaded up the boat and we were off for a great day on the Rio San Pedro.
It was one of Joe’s first experiences fly fishing and did good hooking up on trout as I was a patient teaching, we had fun together.
Dad went down stream using a streamer and hooked a large trout here, but only for a moment…
I love the Rio San Pedro in Chile, never I see another boat but on this day small trout is all we seemed to be hooking. But Dad’s attitude was great as he was living the moment with his son out on a sunny day in Southern Chile, nothing could dull the good vibes and good energy that was flowing between our legs that day. Some have told me that you never fish the same piece of water twice, maybe that’s what always brings us back to the river and renews our inner spirit.
Carola’s lunch is always a pickmeup in the middle of the day!
Trout could of been bigger that day and we have caught larger ones of course, but I can’t control that. Dave and Joe made the best of what was presented to them and we all had a great drift on the Rio San Pedro.
That night we had a great BBQ asado part out in the front yard where we hammered down some brews and fine Chilean wines. We hung out until 1 am or later and looked up at the Southern Cross and saluted with a nice buzz on our breathes.
My wife Carola hugged me and asked Dave to take a picture fo us. I sure am the happiest guy in Chile, we had so many tough times the past 3 years with losing our daughter, both losing our fathers within a month of each other, volcano eruptions, earthquakes and being separated over the past summer beacuse of the United States fudged up system on immigration and you name it. But now things seem to be really shaping up and our business both in the USA and Chile is doing great. Thanks to all of you, We’ll be there always ready to make your adventures our adventures!
“Hello Cal Trans, Do I need chains for my reindeer to get through on interstate 5, if they all have shiny red noses?”
Dinner that night was awesome as usual and we partied hard, ate and hit the sack ready for another day out on the river.
We started out in this lake that led us to a terrific river, Dave hooked into a Padilla a South American fish from Argentina. (Thanks Mauricio!)
Once the lake turned into a river, we started hooking into these powerful trout that took us almost into our backing.
Joe continued his lesson in fly fishing, and knew right away that these fish on this river were in a different league compared to yesterday’s hook-ups..
Joe was really coming around and was a great student of fly fishing as he hooked as many trout as dad on both days.
Then the double hook-up happened and all heaven broke lose!
Merry Christmas Everyone!!
Dave hooked another, then Joe, then Dave, then Joe!
Then Dave hooked a really nice trout that landed him SIZZLER OF THE WEEK!!
CONGRATULATIONS DAVE FERRON OF GRESHAM OREGON, YOU ARE MY SIZZLER OF THE WEEK AWARD WINNER! SALUDOS DE CHILE, JACK & CAROLA TROUT
The release of nice rainbow trout in Chile is not over rated Sizzlers!
That day we spent 11 hours out on the river, one of the things I like to do for our valued clients is spend over 10 hours out on the river. I love my job and the river is my life, Chile rivers are so cool to be out on all day!
Don’t even think of Chile as a 3rd world country, they have the same things we enjoy in the United States, some things are even better. JT&CT
Here’s our cabin we offer on the banks of the Rio Maullin near Puerto Varas and Purto Montt, in the Lakes District of Chile.
Dry fly fishing right out in front of our cabin with easy wading.
“Hey folks Trout’s got it dialed in on your next adventure fly fishing Chile!”
We wanted to take this time to thank all the folks in 2010 that called on us for fly fishing and scenic tours, we look forward to even better seasons in 2011. Thanks to all of you out there, Jack & Carola Trout
Let us be your guiding light this holiday season!
Special guest appearance by my good friend Mauricio Chilean Trout. He caught this nice brown on a Parachute Adams size 14.
On another day he caught and released this trout and went on to catch many more!
Now is a good time to be on top of your game no matter what business you’re in.
First Christmas without my POPS, hasn’t been easy folks. I think about him all the time and all the good he did in his life educating hundreds of students in a 33 year career in the small town of Portola, California. He’s in me now and I try to always remember my happy childhood memories with him. He never let me down as a father, maybe if one day I became a father, I would pass on his message of life. How life is about how you treat others in a positive way. He didn’t care about money, he didn’t care about anything other than a simple love of life and sharing what he learned with others. He was the most intelligent kind and gracious man I ever knew and I love him. He lived to be 90 years old and never had any major health problems, he passed with his children and grand kids near his side on a final breath of life. Please on this Christmas give your MOM and DAD some extra love and think about how your family is all you got in life. Love goes out to all of you on this holiday season where ever you are from, in any country on our great Earth. This Christmas for me will be a silent night, but one in which deep down I smile. Love, Jack & Carola
Thanks for watching our adventures folks! Have a safe and happy holiday. Many Rivers & Vistas, Jack & Carola Trout
EMAILS FROM YOU:
Merry Christmas to you and Carola Jack. My Pop is 90 and I will have a big gin with him, give him a hug and a kiss, and tell him all he has meant to me, which is more than words can say. You and Carola have had an epic struggle to get where you are now, and I celebrate it with you through your blog and the wonderful times my boys, friends, and I have shared with you on the rivers in NorCal. Can’t wait to do Chile with you some day.

Hi Carola and Jack: My husband and I are planning a trip to Chile and he loves to fish, and I love to learn! We will be there the end of December or beginning of November and am wondering if you can give me some ideas of if you have any room?

Dear Jack Trout:
I hope you can help us. My wife and two young kids (4 and 7) would like to hire a guide for one day (or half day) between January 31 and February 4 in the Mt Shasta area.
We are total beginners, essentially never fished before, so we are looking for a very simple introduction for us and the kids.
Could you accommodate us, or suggest who we can contact?

Jack,
we spoke on the phone a few days ago (friday) but got cut off because of my cell service. As I mentioned we are planning to head south on the overnight ferry from puerto montt to Chiatan late at night on the 20th (I think it is actually at 1am on the 21st). Anyway that leaves us with no where to sleep on the 19th and a full day to do kill on the 20th… do you guys have availability on the 19th? or do you have suggestions of where to stay? also if you are available maybe we could book some sort of adventure on the 20th through you and your wife?
You had mentioned that you might be able to help us with our one way ferry tickets, if that is still on the table we would love the help.
Cheers,
justin

Hi Jack,
I just received the FAX copy…I will adjudicate the case today and will send it to NVC via UPS. Merry Christmas and happy new year!
Thank you,
Noela
Carola’s entry into USA is approved! jt

Jack,
Go ahead and book the car for me. I guess there’s not much choice if I want to get across into Argentina. Carola’s last note mentioned that you might have a personal car to rent me; but that would be asking a bit much of you guys, so please don’t feel you have to offer that. As far as accommodations in Argentina, I was hoping to run through some suggested fishing spots with you once I get down there, but do you have any suggestions on places to stay? I’ve got the Fodor’s Chile and Argentina books you suggested coming down to me form the US for Christmas, but I haven’t seen them yet.
I’ve been buried In constant work in Panama and Colombia for the past six weeks. Haven’t even had much of a weekend off since October. So I’m really ready to get down there and away from contact with my office.
Merry Christmas to you both, and I’ll see you soon.
David

Hey Jack,
My mom wants to possibly book a trip for my nephews with Isaac Roman, but I don’t see him on your blog site. Could you tell us how to find him on your site so we can forward his pictures to my nephews?
Thanks and happy fishing.

Jack,
Thanks for the quick reply. I think the $225 for our wives will be fine for a tour off the cruise ship with Carola. Consider it a reservation.
Looking forward to this very much. Will contact you again just prior to departure to confirm reservations and payment methods.

Dear Friend,
Tropical Storm Tomas passed Haiti this past weekend, fortunately leaving Petionville camp with less damage than anticipated.
Throughout Friday night, however, the storm’s tail dropped several hours of heavy rain, increasing problems of sanitation and escalating the conditions by which cholera is spread
The current cholera epidemic in Haiti has affected over 7,000 Haitians and killed nearly 500 over the past few weeks. Dire sanitation conditions in camps throughout Port-Au-Prince make the dense population more vulnerable to this disease than ever before.
J/P HRO’s immediate focus is prevention in Petionville camp, and treatment in the places where the epidemic is most concentrated. In collaboration with Partners In Health (PIH), J/P HRO continues to deploy medical teams to St. Marc, Hinche, and Arcahaie.
Hurricane Tomas further exacerbated the challenges of accessing and accounting for cholera’s reach in these rural areas, and the outlook is grim. Reports from volunteers and staff working around the clock to save lives in abysmal conditions suggest this epidemic is still far from stabilizing.
Clean water is essential. Immediate relief and emergency resources will be in demand until this disease is contained. However, we can’t effectively treat and eradicate this cholera epidemic if we don’t simultaneously improve the conditions that cause it. This deadly epidemic highlights the serious need to invest in long-term improvements for Haiti.
J/P HRO NEEDS MEDICAL VOLUNTEERS TO JOIN THE FIGHT: We need at least 14 medics per week to support and continue our cholera-targeted medical operations. Licensed medical personnel who are flexible, resilient, resourceful, and comfortable working in an austere environment are encouraged to join our team. Unfortunately we cannot take EMT’s, medical students or under 3rd year resident MD’s. This work is first and foremost about saving lives, not a learning experience, so we are looking for people who can manage these roles well in a high stress emergency environment. If you are a medical volunteer who can make this commitment, you WILL make a difference.
Not able to volunteer?
- Make a contribution to J/P HRO. No matter how much you can afford to give, every dollar of your contribution goes directly to helping the people of Haiti.
- Start fundraising for J/P HRO. Help bring your friends and family into the fight against the cholera outbreak in Haiti by setting up your personal fundraising page and asking them to contribute.
- Donate Supplies: Click here for a list of medical supplies we urgently need to fight the cholera outbreak.
Please also be sure to forward this email on to friends, family members or colleagues who may be able to help financially or by volunteering.
Thank you for everything you do.

Hi Jack,
Good to visit last week. Talked to my friend and we would like to see if we can arrange fishing on January 18th? We arrive on the cruise ship Celebrity Infinity at 9 AM. The ship departs at 7 PM although we do not want to cut the time too close, probably want to be back at 5-5:30 PM. We are experienced fly fisherman, both wading and from drift boats. (I fished steelhead on the Trinity with you in February 2007). We will not have equipment with us, but will have warm clothes, gloves, hats, etc., so will need waders, boots and rods. Will also need to get the appropriate license. Can you meet us at the docking area for the ship and return us there? How long will it take us to get a license and make it to the river where we fish? Checking your web site, looks like browns, atlantic salmon, and rainbow should be fishable, is the fishing good in January? And finally what is the cost?
Look forward to hearing from you.
Regards, John Pierson

Hello,
I am interested in 3 days of guided float fishing for me and a friend. We will be flying into coyhaique on Feb 4th and out on Feb 19th. We are on a shoestring budget and plan to rent a car and bum around the region looking for places to fish, camp, and backpack into. These trips can be overnight with camping or you can give me some offers. We can also spread them around so that we can check out different rivers.

Hey Jack,
I am here in Santiago. Very last minute, so I haven’t brought any gear, but was wondering if there were any opportunities with you or anyone else you could recommend to get out for a day or half day of trout fishing.
If there is any chance at all, please let me know as soon as possible. I am here on work for the next 8-11 days, and will have to try to get away.
Right now, avails are either tomorrow. Or possibly the 6 (or maybe the seventh if I can change my ticket to fly back to Canada.
Sorry for the last minute request.
Hope you are well,
Ron MacDonald
