Mt Shasta up close! Wow, what a year for snow pack, looks like we’re way above the historical averages for a normal snow fall year. In fact, we’re 162% above normal, on and around Mt Shasta. I figure I’ll be able to raft into mid-July. The latest I’ve ever rafted in the past is June 22nd. This year will extend that date into July, and I’m very happy about that. Drove up to Merlin, Oregon yesterday, and bought another Sotar raft, trailer, and frame, so we now have two rafts on the Upper Sac! This will be the first year rafting, where the flows will be perfect for all the hatches that normally appear in mid-June and July. Imagine floating out of my raft with a dry fly tied to the end of your tippet, possible a Golden Stone imitation that is easy to see. As we drift down the Upper Sac and you cast your fly into the side of the banks a trout appears and takes your fly and runs! (mind candy!) See you out there!!! Jack Trout
Rick and Valorie McEnroy came and visited me this past week and we had a ball together!
Rick hooked into over 20 trout that day and enjoyed his time out on the river. We seemed to do best with two nymphs about 12 feet from the indicator and three big AB weights. The fly that has proved most productive has been the Pheasant tail size 14, no bead head. Dry fly is just starting to happen, next month…..Look-out!!
Rick fished most of the day, while Valorie came along for the ride and possible a try on the fly rod a later in the day. The views were spectacular and the wild azalea scented the air as we made our way down the beautiful canyon. Everywhere we looked was a priceless visa commercial…..

Isn’t it great sometimes just to kick-it on a beach somewhere and take in the day! After lunch Rick and Val did just that….
So then it was time for Val to try her luck and right away she hooked into a lunker!!
She hadn’t really ever fly fished before and was enjoying her time in the spotlight.
The trout fought hard and long, but Val did a great job and enventually landed the trout and kept the smile on her face! This is such a fun part of my job, when you have someone with zero expectations and they hook into a trout of a lifetime for a beginner!!

VERY RESPECTABLE TROUT!! WE’VE BEEN HOOKING INTO, AND LANDING BIGGER THAN USUAL TROUT IN THE HIGH WATER. I THINK THERE’S A LOT OF TROUT COMING UP FROM SHASTA LAKE!!!
I might mention, that no one should do this trip on their own. I am a certified class 4 rafting guide who has been rafting the Upper Sac for over 14 years. There are waves, rocks and holes that I can’t show you at the time cause I’m rowing us out of danger. The picture you see is one of the nice runs we go through. Two years ago, two inexperienced guides trying to copy my trip without forest permits, issued by the Shasta/Trinity Forest, flipped a boat and lost all their rods, equipment, etc. Heck, I was finding their equipment for weeks after they spilled their cookies. It takes years of experience to do this trip and it starts by rafting it and knowing the river intimately first, like 10 years!
The next day I took Rich alone out to Hat creek, while Val shopped around the Mt Shasta area. We agreed to meet up at Burney Falls at 3pm.
The fly fishing was slow at first but then we hooked into a few trout on nymphs. Recently
the E.C. Caddis size 14 on the surface has been an effective fly to use.
I sure like the new Chili Peppers CD, lots and lots of great songs!
Hat Creek is clear spring creek, born in the glaciers of Lassen Peak. Its high nutrient based waters, serve as a perfect habitat for the millions of aquatic insects flourishing in the algae and wood that frequents the bottom of the creek. The temps of the creek are always about 43 degrees when spilling out of any lava tube or aquifer, and remain a constant 52 degrees in most sections throughout its course, finally meandering into Lake Britain, where it eventually becomes apart of the Pit River.
Down below the weir, we hooked into three fish, but none fought like this one did!
Over at Burney falls, Burney Creek was flowing at full force! Notice in the picture the lava tubes spilling out water is from Mt Lassen. This is the highest I’ve ever seen the falls! I want to take this time to thank Rick and Val, for coming up and visiting me. I really enjoyed our time together! jt
Tumblers! You’re calling my name….
This is the third annual Persyn family fishing contest. Yvonne has been the crowning winner for last two years and Chuck, Yvonne’s father, sent me an email beforehand to mention that this year was going to be different! Yvonne caught three big trout in this one spot to really get under her father’s skin….
Rod bent, reel screaming, Yvonne returned to her usual form, like a professional sports team you could never beat (John Elway vs. Bernie Kosar comes to mind).
What in the hell is that???? I think it was up from the lake spawning…..The funny thing is Yvonne broke this fish off, and caught it again 4 minutes later with all the flies from before in it’s mouth. That what I call the “Spring-Bite!”
Once again Yvonne hooking up as dad watches in dismay…
And then it happened, we headed into Upper Delta and Chuck into a very respectable trout right next to the boat!
Chuck did it! He hooked the biggest trout of the day and won the 3rd annual Persyn Purse
Annual Fly Fishing Contest!! Finally Chuck, you can take that monkey off your back.

Mister Jack I would like to join one of your fishing trips. I used to
fly fish then my gear got stolen..so for the last 3 years I just trout
fish with lures in the creeks or boat fish in the lakes. I love the
McCloud/Hat Creek area. I saw your group one time when I was fishing at
McCloud River (below the damm).
Please email me the cost for one of you river/creek trips. I want to
start flying fishing again..and I must say I can really throw that fly
or lure just where I want it! (a good shot). My father use to tell me
how good I was on throwing out that line and getting that fly or lure
where I wanted it.
Great waist action! I plan to be there in area of McCloud the week of
June 9th to fish the lake. Any space in The Jack’s Boat for that
weekend?
