What a week of weather we’ve had up here in the Mt Shasta area. Some temps have reach mid 90’s this week, with daily thunderstorms and rain. Who’da thunk it? I say people, dress for the four seasons this trip! (This message was brought to you by the Fifth Season, located at 300 N. Mt Shasta Blvd. Mt Shasta) We had a lightning storm and hard rain on Wednesday night, June 28th. My customer John McNeary, who was driving out in the Shasta Valley said the lightning was like looking into the flash of a camera and the rain was like the Amazon. (Be careful out there)! Also if you are driving on Hwy 89 by McCloud, look out for deer and drive slow, I hit one myself
and this has left a lasting impression on me and my Nissan…But what can you do when they run out in front of you? (Drive slower TROUT)!
I am damn proud to be an American this 4th of July and I plan to show it by heading off and fly fishing around Lake Almanor, and then checking out the ever so colorful High Sierra Music Fest in Quincy, California while the other guides hold down the fort! It feels great after 15 years to slow down a little and enjoy some of these holidays you all have been talking about for so many years. My brothers Tim and Pete will be there, with all my nieces and nephews also present!
On my day off I headed for the coast to see my dear friends Aaron and Mandy to join them in Arcata, California for the annual Oyster Festival. You know me I love it all, fly fishing, guiding, international espionage (no girl is safe in Chile) and solving mysteries without any clues! I have to keep these adventures rolling for YOU! the Sizzlers!!!

This was a shot I took traveling through the redwoods on Highway 101. I like to go to the coast at least three times a year including taking a jet boat up the Klamath and fly fishing the steelhead right when they run into the river from the ocean. I will be offering those trips for groups up to 6 anglers from August 15th to Sept 30th. Give me a call if you are interested in catching big steelhead in August. Thanks Jack Trout

After the fest the next day Aaron, John and I headed up the coast to check out the Smith River. On the way up I thought about the redwoods and how they are the oldest trees in the world. For all my viewers in Chile, your Alerce trees similar to our redwood, are the second oldest trees in the world. The views were wonderful and just like every time I head up the coast of California, my mind was in a state of bliss, and the forests were mysterious and fascinating with beauty!

I can’t wait to fish this river this fall! We caught some small cutties and rainbows, and heard rumor that someone the previous day landed a 22 inch cutthroat!
Jack and Madeleine Protsman came over from Lake Almanor, not really knowing what to expect.
Right away Madeleine hooked up and the day was set!

It was truly a grand day on the Upper Sac for both George and Madeleine. George and Madeleine were in the Strawberries Sizzlers!
Up high, we could see a bald eagle on top of his 12 foot + nest. With all the fourth of July activities coming soon to Mt Shasta, the bald eagle stood in front of us as a symbol of freedom.
Scott Jones came to town with a group of characters! We fished three in my raft that day and it worked great. These guys caught many trout and reflected on how as kids, they loved watching the Captain Kangeroo Show! My favorire was Mr. Green Jeans…..

Dry fly fishing has been off the charts this summer! I’ve never been able to float the river this long in previous years. This will be a rafting/fly fishing year to remember on the Upper Sac.This trout was a lunker! When it hit the dry fly, it sipped it without moving, an unbelievable take! Seeing trout being caught out of my raft on dry flies is my finest endeavor.
Jim and Steve had a great day out on the Upper sac this past week! Whether it was wading or floating, the fishing seemed to be on that day!

Joan was such a delight to guide on the Upper Sacramento River. She, too, was in her element, as she hooked many trout out of my raft! Joan travels all over the world and plans to join us in Chile for the 2007 season!
Joan hooked a trout just before we entered a heavy current. She kept her tip high and rode the little bullwinkle to safety.
Meanwhile, Pat Patterson is out in the other raft, “Futa,” which will run its course here in the United States and then be shipped down to the Rio Futaleufu, for our 2007 season down in CHILE!!! I’m so excited. We will then have at least two boats in the Yelcho/Futaleufu area and two boats in the Puerto Varas area. We need to have a raft in the Futaleufu area for some of the wave trains we run at higher water levels. Last year Pancho and Nico, thought I needed a saliva test (crazy Gringo) for running a class 3 set of waves in a drift boat. (I owned it though)! We will also have vehicles in both places and new trailers. On this day Pat was fired up to be on our new raft with a chance for catching trout on dry flies.
Then Joan landed her trout! What a great lady, full of life, fun loving, good-natured soul. When you meet Joan Boxcell, you never forget her. What an awesome role cast!!!

As the rafting season comes to a close, I would like to thank Mt Shasta for all the snow it’s held this past winter, it’s only because of being 162% above normal snow-pack that we are still able to float its majestic waters. And a big thanks, of course, goes out to the Upper Sac and all of my loyal customers. Thanks for making this the best raft season I’ve ever had!! I love this trip, as much as life itself. I thank the Sky Pilot every time I do this trip!!

I fished over some incredibly large browns at Almanor yesterday, but had to leave home, so I never dialed them in. Was at the north shore, just along the highway 36 and railroad, west of the north shore campground. The huge browns were jumping and splashing all along the rocks and out like 200 yards!
There was a dark mayfly coming off, but the fish were seemingly rising to mayflies, though I think they were eating them. What I mean is they were not working the mayflies, cruising and such. They were literally coming out of the water, shaking their tails on the way back in!
I hooked one on a leach, fishing a Rio Aqualux (Stillwater line). Must have been close to 10 pounds. Hook came unbuttoned and broke my heart. I think I needed to set it in deeper.
At any rate, I plan on coming back up for 2-3 nights 4th of July weekend, and would love to fish with others that know the lake well. I need to check the moon cycle, and frankly need to learn more about that and the Hex hatch at Almanor.

Thanks for the great trip down the Sacramento River! Taking on three fishermen in your raft must have been quite a challenge! We really enjoyed the trip and Dave wouldn≠t shut up about the big rainbow he caught on the dry fly. We will definitely be back for some more “Shatna” action. Great fishing, great views and a wonderful guide!

I wanted to thank you again for the wonderful day of fishing/rafting on Saturday. I wouldn≠t have missed it for anything. I really appreciated the whole new view of the river and its wildlife, especially those huge cruising trout. How soon should I book a trip for next spring?
On the subject of next year, Joan and I told all of the women at the Rendezvous how much we enjoyed our day. Many of the women picked up your brochures. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the women call you for a future day of rafting and guiding.
Finally, one of our attendees is putting together a digital photo album to post on the International Women Fly Fishers website. So, if you would be willing to email me any of the pictures that you took of Joan and me for posting on the IWFF website, I would appreciate it.

fun day the other weekend- next time perhaps we’ll catch some sea run cutts. I am floating hawkins Bar to the Klamath this weekend on the trinity- hoping for a springer and will also flyfish for steelies- who knows. I had knee surgery last thurs and it already feels better than it did prior- so i will be back at it hard soon.

I wanted to e-mail you on July 4th just to say “Hi, have a nice celebration day”….. but time has gone by quite fast…. and I have been so busy at work….when I get home, all I want is to sleep….you know me.
Anyway, here I am. How have you been??? How is business doing?
I´ve been fine…well, I was very stressed some weeks ago, but Now I feel better.
Finally I didn`t get the scholarship to go to Japan….that is so sad….but I really appreciate your help with the letter. This year there were too many applicants, about 70 people, and the scholarships go to only 5 people. Well, I wasn´t one of the favourites…
2 weeks ago I went to visit my family in Temuco. I was missing them too much. I spent only 1 day and a half there, because the rest of the time I was travelling by bus (you know it`s a long trip from La Serena to Temuco: 16 hours). But it was a lovely time with my mom, I needed her love and I needed a decent meal (I asked her to prepare me some beans).
Last weekend I was in the city of Antofagasta, in the very north of Chile. I was invited by LAN Airlines and Radisson Hotel to spend the weekend there, because I am in charge of Acquisitions in my work and we “buy” a lot to these companies. So this was like a gift for our preference……and I was the lucky one!
You should visit the north of Chile and see the contrast in the landscapes of Chile…it`s so different to the south….but beautiful too!
