Beargrass up high at 7000 feet on the Eddies Mountains. When it gets too hot down low, I head for the hills! I like to go up on the Eddies this time of year and jump in one of our high-mountain lakes.
I must of been guiding Bill james now for over 10 years! I remember way when Shasta Dog was just a puppy, guiding Bill and his wife Nancy, on the Upper McCloud, near Upper Falls and Lakin Dam. Now in my raft on the Upper Sac enjoying the longest raft/fly fishing season ever! What a great day we had together!
Nice trout Bill !!!
The hook ups were so good on this day, even the dry fly fishing was very predictable. We caught trout on nymphs and dry flies, but none was better than this hook-up near this fallen down tree on a dry!
Bill James, CONGRATULATIONS YOU’RE MY SIZZLERS OF THE WEEK AWARD WINNER!! CONGRATULATIONS SIZZLER!!
Osprey Canyon home with incredible views is available from $150 to $200 per night depending on group size. Sleeps up to 12, and is located near the Upper Sacramento River.
The McCloud River has been fishing great this season as soon as the waters came down. I like using a stimulator size 10 with a two nymph dropper rig down to 5 1/2 feet below the dry fly. As my dad would say, “snakey”!
Look close in the river you can see the trout!
Tiger Lilly’s are my favorite wild flowers. Right now is a good time to go out and view our local wild flowers, or just kick-back and let me find them for you!
I headed over to the High Sierra Music Fest in Quincy, California over the 4th of July weekend. Aaron Greener guided everyday and gave me the unique opportunity of celebrating our nations birthday away from any river or lake guiding. I did fly fish Lake Almanor, but the pictures didn’t turn out that good, and frankly I didn’t enjoy all the people out there with me. Fly fishing with 100 people in a bay is not my idea of tranquil zen.. So I left Lake Almanor earlier than I had planned, to join up with my family at the music fest. Here’s my brother Tim, and his wife Tina, enjoying the sounds of Tea Leaf Green.
People were jumping all around the place, laughing, dancing, enjoyng the summer California heat, and the great sounds of the festival musicians!
I liked the music of Tea Leaf Green, it reminds of the days when Tim and my sister M’lissa would take me to the Day on the Green concerts in the San Francisco/Bay Area as a kid. Growing up in the 70’s in Portola, California it was always a treat for me to be taken to concerts at a young age. I think going to festivals and thinking young ideas, makes you young, at least in the heart & mind! Don’t buy into this aging process crap, it’s all in your mind Einstein!! (Now lets her your best concert memories, and I will post them under; Your Emails. The winner of the best “concert story” receives a free certificate for a 3 hour evening with Jack Trout dry fly fishing on the McCloud River!!!). So there you go Sizzlers, the best story wins! Who did you see and where? What year it happen, and did anything significant happen…? jt
I saw this nice family who were having their family reunion like we do every year at the music fest. Except this was a huge family and they all looked related alright. I asked them to pose for mtshasta.com and this is what I got!! Classic by anyones standards, what a great fam!
Then those chocolate bananas! They should be banned in most states, they taste so good I must ate 12 or more in 3 days! I was like Forest Gump, when he went to visit the President of the YOU-nited States, and drank all those bottles of DR. Pepper. Maybe it was the girl selling them? all I know was, I loved those chocolate covered bananas, anywhere, anytime, on any planet!
(Suagr Loaf Mountain, Sierra Valley)
On my way back home, I cruised through Beckwourth, California up over the Clover Valley road, near Antelope Lake. Then over to Janesville, and up through Susanville, and then Mt Shasta. As great as a commute one could ever have to visit their family and father! What spectacular views!!
This picure is the very north area of Sierra Valley, I have spent countless hours hiking around these mountains with my brother Pete. I love and miss Sierra Valley,
and when I visit my father in Portola, I always come out and visit my childhood places and remember back when…The best part is my brother Pete, has a house out here and anytime I visit, I can stare out into the valley of my childhood dreams.
This is the second annual Alec and Dory Braun fishing extravaganza!! This time they brought out friends and family to experience the excitement as we raft, and do a little fly fishing. Since we had 9 people, 5 being children, I thought it would be wise to bring out a few rods and have two rafts for the rowdy group clan!
Alec hooked up first and brought the trout in with ease! Way to go Elmo!
Feeling sorry for the trout Alec preformed mouth-to-mouth, to help revive the trout and set it free!!
Chester Kyle was the other guide, who knows the Upper Sac like Obi-Wan Kenobi! (Ben)! I was like Luke Skywaker, when Chester took me under his wing over 12 years ago and taught
me the ways of force! (Upper Sac Force that is)! Anyway Chet, is a local legend you all you should know about.(He and Crazy E, are the only ones I know who have ran from the middle falls parking lot on the McCloud River, and jumped off the side of the cliff over 100 feet into the middle falls pool! I have about 20 other stories like this about these guys. (Of course I don’t tell customers until they are already in the boat)!!!
Ah, what a priceless visa commercial! Alec and Dory, what a good father!!
Then things got hot so Alec and I took the plunge together!!!
After that we hooked a bigger trout, the whole family was impressed!
Douglas Akay made it up again and brought his family to go rafting and catch some trout.
What a nice red strip!
With all the high flows this season, I like to go to side channels that are drying up and run trout 10 yards back over to the main-stem of the Upper Sac. (Remember it’s illegal to transport trout to other streams, but something like this is Ok, the DFG said.
I feel so good when I save 20 or more trout, its my civic duty!(Job security)?
Nice trout Alexander Kyle Akay, initials AKA…. What is your real name? Like I haven’t heard that before….! What a great kid!! This is the most well behaved kid I have ever met in 15 years of guiding! Not only is Alexander patient, but for 8 years old he is the most self entertaining kid I’ve ever met. Way to go Alex, You’re my Junior Sizzler of the week!!! Your father and Mother should be so proud of you, I’ve probably guidied over 2000 kids and you’re the tops!!
Team-work pays off!
Happy Campers = Happy Sizzlers!! Doug, Catherine and Alexander, thank you so much for coming up I had two great days with all of you!! Hope to see you in the fall! jt
