This is a picture I took on the way to my favorite place on earth Futaleufu. After my travels through Argentina it was time to pack it up and head over the hill. It was so fun to fish Martin on the Rio Limay and every McCloud Rainbow was such a memorable treat! So I thought I’d share the rest of my pictures with you and really give you a taste of what Bariloche, Argentina is all about! Francisco has been guiding our customers on the Rio Yelcho and Lago Yelcho giving me a chance to share with you some more of my experiences. Soon we will get to the fishing, but one must not be one dimentional in life and still others would like to see different things, flavors and sites. So kick back and relax as Trout takes you on a magic journey through the streets of Bariloche and then off to Futaleufu and the Rio Espolon.jt
The best restaurant in Bariloche is the El Boliche de Alberto! He has two restaurants, one
is for Pasta and the other is for steaks (parrilla). There is always a line out the door at both places cause the prices are so right Sizzlers, and the taste is to “live for”!
Pack full as usual but who’s in a hurry when you´re in Bariloche!
I always try to get the table so I can photograph them making the mighty meal. Anyone who knows me well, knows I love to cook at home! I always make home made pizzas, bake and enjoy it with friends and family. I think like the Argentines & Chileans, food is the center of life, sharing it with others is a gift that springs life!
This was so good!! I got an alfredo sauce mixed with a pesto sauce… yummmy Mommy!
This meal was about $6.00US!
Walking the streets of the South American Swiss Alps is a fun day. I always buy paintings for friends and family that are so cool and take on a Shasta Theme from back in the dark ages….
There’s chocolate candy stores everywhere and this cutie was dressed for the part of Heidi. Don’t you love how everyone is so genuine, so living in the moment. I never have anyone disturbed by me asking to take their photo and they know always what it is for. (no creep pictures by me, I charm them and then have full permission to post it for you)!
Therè’s tons of outside dining and a taste of Europe is everywhere you look.
You know how you go to some counties and you look at what they are selling and you either buy out of charity or you think…. I wouldn’t wear this stuff back in the States! Bariloche is different. There are so many great things to buy for men or women, and the prices are right! I think this is the best non-angler town I’ve ever seen, so keep that in mind for the person who doesn’t fish everday.
You can use your credit cards and have ATM access and not have to worry. I have never had a problem in all my years down here, but not every country is as together as Chile and Argentina. (Stay out of Peru it’s been really weird as of late).
Ok Sizzlers, lets try another restaurant called the Marca. It’s only been open for a year and the owner is very nice guy. They always have music playing after 10 pm when all of us go out to eat dinner. Things really get rolling at midnight.
Being greeted at the door by a smiling waiter is something you won’t get at Boliche’s. I was into eating that night not waiting.
This was my Bife Chorizo, wow was that a great steak!! These people know how to make the best staek in the world. Ruth Crisp and Jack’s steak house in Redding can take lessons from these chefs!
Afterwards a cruise by the chocolate stores is a must!
I really liked the food at the Jauja restaurant and the waitress was cute!
Over at the Wilkeney Pub the band started rolling at midnight and in came the girls. I can’t believe how many beautiful girls there are in Argentina! One could get whiplash from
so much eye candy….
I like how everyone you talk to is so interesting and has something to contribute to your travels. I think every North American should travel outside of the United States in groups of no more than 3. It’s why at times we think the world is surrounded by the U.S., only 1/3 of the United States has a passport and so many others have no perspective that other interesting countries are unique in character, customs and family. No matter where you go in life, people are people and I think we need more love in the world…
When was the last time you had dinner outside at one in the morning. I promise you one thing, you can’t sleep with all the fun that is going on outside!

Meanwhile, Martin on a lake like section of the Rio Limay caught a 10 to 12lb McCloud Rainbow!! Babies got back!!
I left Bariloche with a huge smile on my face, and when Nico and I met up at the restaurant called, “I found the cow” in Esquel, Argentina. I knew my travels and adventures were just getting heated up! We enjoyed together Argentina’s most popular beer Quilmes which also sports the colors of their national flag. We then bought a few things we needed for the house in Futaleufu and drove across the border into Chile!
Our good friend Mitch from H2O rafting and the owner of the Martin Pescador restaurant loaned us his raft to take out on the Rio Espolon. H2O is the only rafting company to contact when rafting the Futalefu! This guy has a heart like me and Nico and still remembers why and when he started and what he’s doing it for…YOU!. His wife Tatiana is an awesome chef, and later I will be showing photos from the birthday party we had at the Martin Pescador Restaurant on valentines day and of course more beautiful girls..(my favorite).
Nico and Nico are both originally from Santiago. The one who is not my guide was out enjoying some of his first experiences fly fishing. I think the Rio Espolon is a great place to bring beginners cause they are guarteed a great day out on the river and for sure hook-ups!
The people horse back riding gave us the thumbs up and we knew this was going to be a special day with unsurpassed scenic beauty.
And the Andes Mountains can cure anything and take you to places in your mind you have never been before. It will change your life forever Sizzlers! Born Free!!
Nico immediately hooked into a trout and was so happy to be fighting a McCloud River Rainbow in the Rio Espolon. Dries, streamers and nymphs all work here the river is full of trout and steelhead.

For a beginner any trout is good one!
I don’t care if I catch a thing, I always row cause I love two things in life. Watching my passport get stamped and rowing another river somewhere in the world. Don’t get me wrong, I love to fly fish them too, but my passion is putting you on trout or steelhead and the feel of the oars rolling off my shoulders.
I am haunted by waters of the Patagonia and you will be too!

The Rio Espolon is not a big fish river, but yielding a 10 to 30 fish day is not uncommon
an endeavor for anyone. And when you take into account that you will be catching browns, rainbows and steelhead up to 17 inches all day long, it seems so appropiate for the angler that is wanting to learn the sport of fly fishing. This trout was imported from Loch Levan, Scotland in the early 1900’s.
This picture says it all and I’m excited to share it all with you!
We caught trout all day long and laughed about so many things it was hard to keep tract for the book someday.

Hello,
I am beginning to plan a trip to Chile in the next year for 3-4 weeks and I’d like to fish in the Lake District while I’m there. In my search for something in Chile that isn’t all the way down at the bottom, I found your website. I used to live in Chile in the early 70’s and my father has lived there ever since. I love visited southern Chile a number times when I lived there. I wasn’t much of a fisherman in the 70’s, but I am now. I remember the rivers and hence I want to return to fish them.
With that said, I’d like to get a feel from you when the best fishing season is and how best to take a trip like this without dropping huge sums of money. Ideally, I’d like to get some guide assistance on new waters, but once acclimated I prefer to fish unguided.
I look forward to your response.

I am going with my father to visit a friend at his ranch near Villarica from 19 Feb until 28th feb, after that we are driving down to Bariloche (via San Martin).
I was wondering if it is possible to do a day of guiding in the area?
Which rivers can you recommend for wading near Pucon/Villarica?
I cannot travel too far and stay away for too long due to the constellation of our trip.

river out the back door (I’ve been a serious fly fisherman since the ’50’s and I escape
to the Dunsmuir place regularly to do serious writing). Recently I learned of Westlands
purchasing the Bollibokka Club on the McCloud, and you were quoted in the SF Chronicle,
voicing your opinion on the ramifications of the deal. I’m curious: were you able to
guide on Bollibokka waters? If so, did you have bank access, or did you merely float it?

Thanks for the speedy response before. I also
thought of a few more questions to ask. I think that
we will probably come out sometime in May. What are
the prevelant types of flies to use: nymphs, dry fly,
wet fly, streamers? What kind of bug hatches are
there? Stonefly, hexa genia or mostly exotic
California hatches? Finally, are the rivers around
the Shasta area wadeable or is a boat necessary to get
around?

I talked with Johann this morning on the phone! He´ll be here in Bariloche between March 3rd and 5th! So we have already arranged to float Limay River on the 4th.
