Chile Patagonia – A place where volcano legends are made while rivers and lakes flow untamed journey’s to fill our thristy oceans.
The ride to Chile is long but once you arrive Santiago and take the connector flight to Puerto Montt be sure to sit on the left hand side of the plane to witness the Andes Mountains in all their striking awe and glory!
Volcan Llaima erupted on January 1st, 2008 and I was there! Now the park is closed until further notice…..
I loved that park with all its Arucarria Trees and Lago Conguillio, I’ll miss that special place, so check out my story from those adventures!!

Chilean Volcan classic. Put’s a smile on my face.
Thanks to Kuhl Clothing things got a little better for disaster victims in Chile. As we circled the communities of Maullin and Puerto Montt, my heart started to pound and I couldn’t stop wondering
to myself, is Carola going to be at the airport when I land?
The family didn’t tell Carola and when I arrived to the hospital- I snuck up behind her, put my arms around her – She went to elbow me, and there I was! A very emotional moment indeed. (Her Mother, Nilda in the foreground is so classic, trying to hold back the tears, she’s the best mom anyone could ever have.) A very sad day in the Trout Chronicles.
CAROLA AND I ARE SAD TO ANNOUNCE, CAROLA HAD A MISCARRIAGE. OUR BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER CHAILYN WAS BURRIED AT 8 MONTHS IN LlANQUIHUE CHILE, ON SEPTEMBER 9TH, IN THE MOST BEAUTIFUL LOCATION IN THE WORLD. WE ARE DEVASTATED AND HURT. WE ARE TRYING TO FIND STRENGTH TOGETHER.
PLEASE HAVE US YOUR THOUGHTS, WE NEED SUPPORT RIGHT NOW. WE LOVE YOU ALL AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR EMAILS OF ENCOURAGEMENT FOR OUR NEW FAMILY, IT JUST WASN´T MEANT TO BE NOW. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY THE HARDEST THING I HAVE EVER FACED IN MY LIFE AND IT´S SAD. WE REALLY WANTED OUR LITLE PRINCESS. I FEEL MOST BAD FOR CAROLA, SHE HAS BEEN THROUGH SO MUCH THIS YEAR. LIFE IS CRUEL IN A WAY, LIFE IS LIFE. WE DON´T KNOW WHY, CAROLA DID EVERYTHING RIGHT AND WE STILL LOST OUR DREAMS.
WE WILL TRY AGAIN BECAUSE THE THOUGHT OF THAT LITTLE GIRL IN MY BOAT WITH A DADDY SMILE ON HER FACE MADE ME ELECTRIC IN MY HEART. THE CHAITEN VOLCANO ERUPTION TOOK EVERYTHING FROM US AND WE ARE DEFEATED.
PLEASE GOD, DON´T LET THAT EVER HAPPEN AGAIN, WE DESERVE BETTER.
WE PROMISE TO BE GREAT PARENTS.
IN MY DARKEST HOUR MOTHER MARY COMFORTS ME.
LET IT BE.
LOVE, JACK & CAROLA.

Happy Independence Day – Chile !!! September 18th.
It was amazing the true Nationalism felt and seen in Chile. Everyone- and I mean everyone – puts up a Chilean Flag in front of their home with such honor and pride. I will be very proud again when the United States flies it’s colors and the people of this great land can once again walk with confidence like those I see in a land called Chile … jt
FYI- The Chilean flag was invented 21 years before the Texican flag.
Poor girl had no salt, Peets Coffee, the usuals like alcohol of course.
My girl was hungry like ChanChita!
There was so much food we fed a local afterwards.
The ring People! The ring fits great and dazzles in the Chilean sunlight.
Can’t go wrong with this brew down in the 9th, 10th & 11th regions of Chile.

A Puerto Varas Classic!! South America has wealth, many things are
so great to experience here beacuse of the Spanish/European flare!
I’m particularly fond of the great food. In 17 years I can honestly say I have never been sick on the food. It’s not like other places in the world. Because of the glaciers, if I’m near one, I drink out of the faucet and I consider myself a Mt Shasta water snob.
I like the water in Southern Chile.
Francisco Castano (Pancho) has been my friend for years! He owns Tres Piedras Fly Fishing Guide Service near Puerto Montt, Chile.
He has a wonderful wife and family and in the past years he has helped me so much I am indebted for life. I hope you contact Francisco and send him some business or have him float you down a Chilean river. He deserves trips this season and has always had a 100% commitment to me and his customers. He also has skiing tours for
our summer months, so you snow junkies give him a jingle and get dialed for 2010!!

Thinking of visiting Argentina? Pick up Fodor’s Argentina for the best up to date information. I wrote the fly fishing sections and it was so great to promote the great guides, lodges and rivers in my industry. This is a great year to travel Argentina, prices remain low. Airfare remains high within the country, I suggest staying longer and go by bus or train, or rent-a-car.

Jose Miquel Fritis Perez – Mayor of Chaiten Chile.
The town of Chaiten Chile was almost completely forgotton by the outside world when similar disasters in the world proved better media coverage, May 2nd, 2008 the Chaiten Volcano erupted and a town parrished forever. 10,000 victims displaced, 40,000 animals lost
and a Mayor with a heart of gold for his people struggles for hope, as a town of 10,000 is condensed to a single building in downtown Puerto Montt.
The Mayor Jose Fritis was really happy with Kuhl Clothing’s donation http://www.kuhl-usa.com of almost 3500 pieces of clothes.
The rest are being shipped by Lan Airlines http://www.lan.com
LISTA DE MIERDA – (That’s Shit List if you’re not fluent in Spanish)
We are Very dissapointed in Douglas Tompkins, who has done nothing for the people of this region of Chaiten Chile when he has come in and bought up so much land. I have supported Douglas Tompkins in the past and even defended him in wake of the Spanish eye, but I will not sit back and let these people go un-noticed when you have taken so much and given nothing in a time of true need. You are heartless Doug, you wouldn’t let the Mayor land planes on your land, land that had crucial access at the time to study effected areas and give aid. What is your problem Ugly American sole. The same clothes that made you millions can help out many folks that could really use it and deserve it! Please send new clothes or call the Mayor and get some North Face Jackets sent, these people have suffered enough this year!

Where have you been MISTER? (That’s Senoir in Spanish in case you forgot)
These are Your people, they need new clothes, all they have received besides what Kuhl http://www.kuhl-usa.com has donated has been low grade used clothing.
I called your office before and got the run-around. Contact the Mayor of Chaiten please.

Bless the people of Chaiten Forever and ever, may we rebuild our town
someday and return to a normal life.
With all the crap going on back at home and around the world, it’s so great to see these people happy for something this year!
This picture brought a happy tear. That little girl gives a global message that hope and happiness can happen anywhere, at anytime on any given day. It don’t matter how you vote or where you live, we’re all Human inside and it’s one Global World we live in now, time to get used to it!
The next President will be the most important Preisdent and world figure ever. We must think about the world economy and what a high value dollar means to the world, it only will reflect back on us for prosperous future generations. We have to stop making enemies and start the healing process. We must get the World back behind us, only then will we see a change for the better.

Carola took me over to her Cousin Jaqueline & Javier’s House, what a unbelievable property on almost 300 acres. They run a Tourist Eco Farm – Tourist can come from Europe, USA and South America to Javier’s farm to learn ranching and dairy in an Eco conscience environment all eco and green.
Inside I was so impressed with this totally GREEN oven/stove/water heater/central heating system all in one! This is the most amazing thing ever, they use no gas in the house. This would be a good business to get into, the place that makes them is out of Osorno
for anyone interested we could get more info for designs – What ever?
This idea rocks! I want one pronto tanto!
Upstairs was toasty, very clean and all steam!! No fire hazard and you just throw a hardwood log on the coals and it really conserves
wood.
We have a cabin you can relax in out on this property, with very close access to the Rio Gol Gol.
Dry flies on Lago Rupanco with private access is always nice for my customers…..
Stunning and surrounded by 7 Volcanoes.
Peace Amigos! Thank you Javier and Jaqueline for a great time on your estancia, simpy incredible.

Here’s where customers stay. Great views and plenty of places like Lago Rupanco make for great hiking and unique private Patagonia photo scenes with close vicinity to the Rio Gol Gol and Argentine fly fishing.
Every week we do an authentic Chilean Asado, with music, great food, heart warming drinks and memories that last a lifetime.
Uncle Juan Carlos Castillo and I are like two pees in a pod. This guy never stops talking about fly fishing! If I only found him 17 years ago, my books would of been a lot more boring.
I have a feeling Uncle Juan Carlos will be on many Jack Trout adventures to come, I see some great Argentine rivers in December for sure! Being that I’m so close to Argentina this year, I can pass you over to my guide Martin Rebora in Bariloche and he can guide you
on the Rio Traful and Limay.
This is going to be a great season in Chile. Great equipment is being shipped and bought for this season as we speak.
Look forward to guiding you this year in Chile –

EMAILS FROM YOU:
Dear Jack,
My wife and I were both greatly saddened to hear about the loss of your baby. Our condolences go out to you and your wife. You both are still young enough to start a family. I had my first child at 45! That was 13 years ago. Hang in there and good things will happen.
On a lighter note, I was ecstatic about the defeat of the Nestlé’s contract. A great battle was won but doesn’t mean the war is over yet! We all must keep the opposition strong to keep Nestlé’s from coming back.
We have to force them to totally give up on the Mc Cloud/Shasta area.
Jack, you are the great Giant killer (Nestle)! By keeping us informed on your website, you helped to save the Mc Cloud River ( and town) from a painful death. Ever since I met you, you have been an ardent defender of this most precious and historical river from attacks on all sides. The incredible beauty of this river and its famous trout must not destroyed!
My vision of the future is to have a statue of a giant rainbow trout (made of wood) at the entrance to the town with a pictorial history of the river along its base. Credit should be given to you and others who helped to preserve this natural resource and the fish that inhabit it so our future generations can enjoy.
Sincerely,
Jack Taylor
Jack, FYI, the McCloud Community Services District is having a meeting at the Scout Hall on Monday, 9/22 to discuss potential of reengaging with Nestle on a new contract. Be great if you could make it.

Jack,
What sort of line, leader and flys do you recommend for this weekend?
Floating, sinking, weight, etc.
Thanks,
Kevin Rees.
I remember when I met you that you were on your way to Chile for the
first time, a little nervous about what you would find and how it
would go but determined to see. Based on word of mouth and your
website and so on it looks like it was a good deal for you all in all
– congratulations. Since I saw you then I continued fishing the
indicator for a few years but got bored then switched back to swinging
and then got deep into two handed casting. So on my wanders there has
been some Belize, Ponoi River in Russia, BC, Norway, and
Argentina…Now I am moved back to the east (Hudson Valley), been too
busy to fish much over the past few years, and am now just about ready
to get back into my fishing thing, again.
This December my wife and little kids (5 and 2) are taking a cruise
from Buenos Aires to Valparaiso. One of our stops is Pto Chacabuco,
and I wonder if you can refer my to any guides in the area that I can
hire for a day …is the Simpson River near there ?
Later in that trip we will have a stay in San Martin de Los Andes, and
I am also going to try to make it over to Rio Gallegos where I know
some guides from a previous trip.
Hey Jack,
Well we booked our trip, the itinerary is attached. Can you help us get from Santiago to Puerto Montt? We’re stoked for the adventure.
Dave and Scott
Jack,
Great. I will look around Mountain View and try to get the license before I leave for Redding or along the way if necessary. Should I plan on bringing my waders and boots along with other normal gear? I had not planned on bringing flies but let me know if I need to get anything specific tackle wise. Thanks.

Dear Jack,
You have our sympathies. We are so sorry to hear of your loss, we know how much you were looking forward to your child. Please extend our condolences to Carola; it must be terribly difficult for her. So glad you are with her.
Take care, If you need to talk you know where we are.
Love, Cindy and Richard
Oh my goodness, Jack.
Do you have an address in Chile where we can send cards to Carola?
I am devastated for you. I am so glad you were there with Carola.
I love you.
Tracy
Very sorry to hear that Jack. We had the same problem prior to each of our
successful births. Just something wasn’t quite right. Don’t let it get to
you. We ultimately had two healthy girls. At least one of them is going to
be a good fly fisherman! Let me have some dates when you return.
Best Wishes
Lloyd
Jack,
I heard the news and I wanted to extend my deepest and most sincere condolences. I know no words can console you and Carola during what must be an incredibly difficult time, but just know that Tory and I are thinking of you both. Please remember that while you might feel adrift and alone, you have a big world of people that love and care about you. If there is anything that you and Carola need, please don’t hesitate to ask. If that is helping with the business, shipping something down to Chile, dealing with something at your house while you’re gone, or you just want to talk to somebody – we’re happy to help. Sometimes pain shared is pain divided. So anything we can do, we will.
With much love,
Chris Welch
Very sad. My condolences. You’ll find happiness again.
Still with heartbreak we can keep the faith that life will get better.
We can help it along with love as you so aptly have expressed.
All the best for a quick recovery.
Best regards,
John
Hi Jack,
Bob Price and I fished with you last year. in November. I just left a message on your phone, but I’m not sure it went through. Could you call me 0to discuss a trip and your offer from last year?
Thanks and looking forward to some more Steelhead!
Jim Degnan
Lucky Guy! How’s the fishin’ down there????? Hope all is well. Talk with you soon. Ray
Jack and Carola-
We were so sorry to hear of your loss; my brother and his wife went through something very similar with their first child and I know how devastating it is. Knowing how strong you both are in your convictions and love for each other I know that you will make it through this loss knowing that you have an angel watching over you both. Please know that all of our positive thoughts and prayers are with you both and that we all carry a piece of Chailyn in our hearts.
Love to you both-
Mandy Martin
Jack and Carola, our deepest sympathy
goes out to you. I have always believed that there is a reason for
whatever happens even if the reason is impossible to see. Comfort one
another and look to the future. Best wishes to you,
Mike and Shirley
Jack, had a great time fishing 2 weeks ago. I’m in Charlotte visiting family and we started watching a documentary on the Sacramento River last night (gearing up for our steelhead trip) and who should appear as the authority on fishing the river…..you!
We enjoyed it. See you in late October.
Mike
Jack We are confirmed for our lower Trinity float with Aaron Martin. Please call me if you have not been able to run my card for the deposit. I may need to give you a new card #. Looking forward to it! I’ll call Aaron about the logistics. Have fun in Chile!

Wishing you and Carola both health and happiness!

Thanks for the follow-up/clarification. I would love to make it up
again and will let you know if we can pull it off.
We did enjoy our trip and both guides were excellent. While fishing was
by no means wide open we did land fish the whole time and got to see a
lot of your water. Loved the McCloud and all the roll cast practice,
seemed like those big caddis should fire things up there anytime. Also
got 80%+ the way to the net on a nice salmon which was great.

Hey Jack-
For Dec 19, the operator told me that disembarking could take a while,
up to an hour, and that I should be back by an hour before departure.
Which would make the day 9-4 dock to dock, which is fine with me – just
to do something like that would be a blast.
Meanwhile I have stumbled onto the postings about the the island Chiloe,
which is fascinating and which I would like to get my wife and family
interested in for a visit before we go to Argentina…although if there
are direct flights from Bariloche to Pto Montt then we could possibly do
that as a side trip.
Anyway, thank for being available for this. I hope you can find the
person at NCL to make the sale so they can include your day on the Pto
Mott excursions (experience fly fishing for the fabled Chilean trout
with the historic and famous Joaquim (Jack) Trucha (Trout), who cast the
fly that caught the fish that came to the boat and became the book that
Jack wrote !)
I’ll send a check next time I am at the check book.
regards, Foster
Jack,
I am sorry to report that I will have to cancel my October trip. I’m just not going to be able to get away. (The Market is much like the ocean…one should never turn your back on it. Especially with what is going on now.
Kindest regards,
Jim
Jack,
Look forward to fishing with you on Saturday. Just wanted to confirm that I will be meeting you at location below? I had booked a room in Redding so I am thinking of trying to find someplace closer as it looks to be about an hour drive up to Mount Shasta?

Hi Jack. I hope you remember me. I met you last february on the way from Chaiten to Futaleufu, you owe me a beer. I read about what happened to you and I am so sorry. God is very special, for example I decided to leave Futaleufu last year and you know what happened.
I live In LLanquihue so If you go to the town we could meet.
Take care.
Dear Jack : First and foremost , my condolences to you and your bride on your loss. I have just recently read your posts concerning the events of the last month. Blessings to you and your family. I know we have just recently met , during the purchase of that wonderful little boat. I am compelled by your passion and openness to share the events of your life.. I am returning to Siskiyou county this Saturday to do some more work on our home. Our goal is to be completely moved by next summer. I hope I run into you either at the farmer’s market or the ” Goat” . Keep up the good fight, and spread the love . Our family is praying for your family . Again may the blessing cascade over you and Carola. Respectfully , Michael Otvos

I am very sad to hear about the loss of your daughter.
By the photos, I am glad to see that Carola appears to be in good health physically.
I know you both hurt mentally. My prayers are with you both.
What amazes me is that despite that pain, your posting mostly focuses on helping those in need in Chile and celebrating the wonderful family there.
Your efforts are inspiring to us all.
I wonder if you approached the Pepsi bottlers in Mt. Shasta if they would donate some cash towards the efforts?
Just a thought. Hope all is well otherwise. Like a fall run salmon on the Sac or Feather, don≠t give up your efforts to spawn, Mr. Trout!
Jack.
I’m deeply sorry for your loss. My first grandchild (son) was born on Sept. 8. My daughter-in-law had to have a C-section, but everything turned out fine.
If you are in to some rocking electric blues, see if you can get a hold of “Gone Too Long” by Walter Trout. I think of you and Carola every time I listen to it. Hope to see you again, El “Mr. Bowjangles” Delco
Jack,
I am saddened to hear about the loss of your baby. My condolonces go out to you and your wife.
On October 2nd I will returning to Belize from vacationing in Canada. Hopefully I will see you again soon in Belize.
Namaste,
Michael

Hi Jack,
Sure no problem. We are also getting a lightweight rubber bag that will fit our Pere Marquette in about six weeks.
Sorry to hear about your loss. Twenty-six years ago my wife had an ectopic pregnancy. The child was lost and she almost went with him. A year later almost to the day she gave birth to our son. It will happen for you. But I know how you are feeling and you are in our thoughts.
Best,
Chris
So sorry for your loss, Jack. Our hearts go out to you and your lady.
We really enjoy your pictures and naration.
Gary/Kathleen
