 Here’s our last adventures fly fishing in Chile, what a fantastic season we’ve had. Thanks to all the clients that made it happen.

 When I think back on the season Carola and I had this past six months in Chile. a warm feeling comes over me and I realize it must of been one of our best. The weather, the clients, the fishing was all over the top and sharing it all with you has been fun too.

 People like Terry Done from Australia coming over to Chile for a few days of fishing and a Jack Trout Tour, make it all worth while.

 We had many laughs together out on rivers of Chile and he loved Carola’s meals!

 A masterpiece in the works my friends, there’s nothing like the thrill of a nice trout landed!

 A stream side gourmet lunch is something we all look forward to out on the river.

 Dessert is a must with us too!

 So many perfectly sunny days with no wind in late March and April in Chile, This really made the fishing pleasurable. Carola and would like to thanks Terry Done for coming over to Chile and fishing with us!  🙂  JT & CT

 Now we move over to Valdivia Chile, to check out the seafood market and some of the local characters who chill there! Our new client Jon Rappaport taking some pictures of the sea lions that frequent the wharf for a free hand out.

 A little later we sampled a local delectable that is offered fresh daily from the nearby ocean. This is Congrion Eel with a cream alfredo sauce stuffed with abalone, king crab and shrimp. Very Yummy!

(This fish has a eel tail but is more a fish than an eel. If you like halibut, you would love this non-fishy tasting fish)

 Up high on a cliff over looking the Pacific Ocean, two guides are looking forward to hosting you and your family in Chile in 2013!

 This Rio San Pedro is like a big hearted river, what an amazing place on Earth!

 There’s always some trout hanging out in that glacial water, I think one just took your fly…..

 A very nice 1st catch in Chile Sizzler!! We’re pointed in the right direction for the this week, I can tell.

 This pattern our guide Edgar ties seems to imitate this pancora crab perfectly, the trout sure like it!

 Time for lunch! Hope you like a hot meals and some delicious Chilean wine.

 I would give this meal a 10 rating, the food in Chile is awesome folks.

 Very healthy Jon, I think we’re on a roll my friend.

 McKay is man’s best friend anytime he’s out on the river.

After unhooking one trout Jon caught, he threw back in his fly and hooked another trout immediately that was even bigger. All the better!

 Plenty of Chilean Culture, out cruising around the countryside.

 Pucon Chile, is one of our favorite places to be! You can see the city hall office to the right, if you see there’s a green light underneath the bottom window with the white trim. If that light turns red, you need to leave the town fast because the volcano has erupted….

 Lots and lots of fine dining outside with spectacular views, great atmosphere and just a fun overall town to visit while traveling through Chile.

 Do you want to try the steak and eggs? Hope you’re hungry!

 The new convention center in Frutillar (Strawberry town) what a nice place to check out some opera or a play.

 Volcano Osorno is a magnificent sight to see this close.A highlight if you’re visiting the Lakes District of Chile.

 Wading can be fun when fly fishing, the rivers are so big in Chile it’s rare to find wade-able rivers.

 Heavy rapids, no worries trout love fully oxygenated water it’s just landing the beast!

 Jon, loving every moment of this hot battle and this awesome trout tearing up line back and forth but wouldn’t go over the falls…But then he finally runs over the falls and gets off, oh well what a catch!

 Lunch, the final frontier! Carola’s mom made lunch on this day and boy was it great. Fresh deep fried Merluza. (Chilean Sea Bass)

with a great Chilean wine and a view you would never forget.

 Everyday was a new adventure with Jon Rappaport, he was having so much fun seeing new scenery and great fishing he decided to extend his trip for 5 more days with us!

 This salmon landed couldn’t of hurt… What a great fight that was on a fly rod.

Jon, had such a great trip to Chile he added 5 days, booked 2 weeks for next season with his family and 3 days in Mount Shasta in October. Guess all we can say is thanks so much! We loved our time with you and so glad you had a wonderful experience.

 Andy lives near me in Chile, he bought some land a few years back and hangs out in the USA winters with me in Chile.

 He used to catch bass on a spin rod but now fancies hooking up on a fly rod. For me it’s amazing how much one person can progress in a sport in one season. When I took him out for the first time back in January folks as a beginner, it wasn’t pretty.

 Now all this guy does is land big fish with me on all our local rivers on flies and streamers.

 The perfect habitat for a trout is in these Chilean rivers. Now many are becoming fly only catch & release and this can only lead to bigger and better trout fishing.

 With views like this and trout fishing like back in the 1800’s, I would suggest coming down in 2013 in March or April to Chile.

 I like that window of opportunity!

 New location, fish on!!

 It was my last guide trip of the season on my 20 th season in Chile. It was my 9 th trip of the season with Andy, in which I was very grateful for.

 It started out really slow and like usual Andy’s always makes things great by his positive attitude and good vibes, celebrating life as it appears on our line.

 Very respectful, but on this day Andy was looking for huge fish…

 Then we hooked another 2 to 3 lb rainbow trout that fought hard and the weather, views and scenery couldn’t of been more breath taking.

 I wouldn’t kick her out of the net for eating crackers… Nice trout..

 Look at the tail on that philly! This river has been designated catch & release since 2010 and what a difference in the size of the trout.

 Shrimp pasta dish by Carola Trout!! After that magic dish served by my beautiful Chilean wife Carola a miracle happened. We finished lunch at 3:30 pm and we decided to go back to nymphing and on Andy’s 2nd cast he hooked what looked like a salmon! You know when you hook a fish very close to where you are fishing (4 feet or closer) and you lift it’s head out of the water in slow motion and 

the fish acts as though it doesn’t really know what’s going on. Then it runs and it knows! This happen to us and before long we had the fish on the line for one hour. The most I had ever had a fish on the line was about 45 minutes in 20 years of guiding but this was no normal salmon. I mean it had to be a salmon, it just stayed on the bottom of the river and when it wanted to it could take the line out to the backing like nothing flat mister! Pretty soon it was one hour 45 minutes and I had jumped out of the boat over 11 times thinking this fish must be close to being landed. I saw him numerous times from inside my drift boat and it look to be like a 10 lb fish. I was sure I saw the big rubber-legged stonefly nymph right in his yapper so he wasn’t foul hooked. Then he would run again out into the riffle, but we were lucky there was no trunks or structures that seemed to be working against us. Finally at 5:50 Pm – 2 hours 25 minutes after hooking this trout we landed Moby Dick. I would have to say, normally it would of sounded strange to me if I heard a fish taking this amount of time to land, but in my 2o years of guiding, I have never seen anything like this trout. That’s right, it was a 10 to 14lb trout.(You be the judge) It was 27 inches long and was the strongest fish I have ever ran into guiding. Congratulations Andrew Swann of Panguipulli Chile for landing this huge trout, everything had to be perfect to even have a chance of landing this once in a lifetime trout. (Hope not Andy!)

 No folks that is not the head of an aligator! That’s a rainbow trout!!

What a fantastic way to end my season in Chile with Carola.

 

This is the greatest trout I’ve ever landed as a guide. I would call this the “Trout that stood the test of time!” This trout not only survived at least 6 hook ups in his life time from spin rods, bait and the Abu-Nescafe-can fishermen. See the line scars left on his jaw!

All those past anglers didn’t take the time to land this crafty, sly and wise old fish, until 2012 when Andy Swann came along and the trout actually outlived the catch and take laws as the river is designated and patrolled as a catch & release river. It really did stand the “TEST” of time by breaking everyone else off, only to  finally be landed by a catch and release guide and fisherman who are grateful that this incredible fish still exists. Then for it to be a 10 lb plus  rainbow, wow!

Way to go Andy, everything had to be perfect to land this beast.  JT

 

 Here’s the beef! This is why catch in release is so effective, Jurassic Trout will appear. Chile’s fly fishing tourism program orchestrated by Serna Pesca is heading in the right direction, folks you just don’t catch trout like this in Argentina or in rivers where dams have been constructed. bravo to the catch and release programs that allow fish from the ocean lakes and rivers to migrate undisturbed in the Rivers & Lakes District in Chile. BACK IN SHASTA – BACK IN MOUNT SHASTA!!!

 Howard Nestell and his wife came up to deliver our guide dog Kobe Beef, Carola and I were still decompressing from the hemisphere leap, so Forrest guided Howard and his wife Jody into some really nice trout fly fishing on the Lower Sacramento River, near Chico & Sacramento California.

We had a wonderful float out on the Upper Sac that day, it was our annual scout trip as I had my first guide trip of the year in North America the next day on May 5th, 2012.

Forrest’s wife Kalani landed this nice trout to kick off the season for me, Carola & Beef. It was so great to out on a rushing wild river in an a inflatable raft with two friends.

Rich Creeggan, longtime friend and client for over 10 years came up with his son Dave for a little early springtime fishing. The river was a little high the first day but was running clear and all the leaves are on the trees so the bugs were out. Mid-day temps has been about 75 degrees, dry and comfortable. I’ve have been out in shorts, wet wading.

Fish On Rich, very nice to feel that hard fighting trout on the end of a very flexy fly rod.

Sweet! Good to be back folks, I do have dates open for May, June & July so give me a call and I’ll float you down the Upper Sacramento River above Shasta Lake.

Dave you’re playing my tune. Congratulations on the new baby arriving in August, look forward to seeing the next generation someday in the future in a Jack Trout Fly Fishing guide boat.

Then mid-day arrived and we starting hooking trout pretty regularly, it was a real hoot! Good sized trout too…

Just a fun time folks out here on the Upper Sac this spring, call now as some weekend dates are open but more so, the fishing will be best for big trout, early this season in May & June.
