Looks like all this rain we’re receiving can only help the already great steelhead season we’re experiencing here on the Klamath River in California, Scott Fitzgerald from Santa Rosa sure thought it was all great.
Scott had never caught a wild steelhead, so this was a real treat and another notch he can add to his fly fishing bucket list.
Look at that rod tip bent over in full flex, makes the heart grow fonder for the sport.
The first time you see your steelhead catch is a real thrill, we are having a good coho spawn and the bigger steelhead are showing up now!
Come to papa!
It’s been really exciting how good the fishing has been on the Klamath with not a lot of other anglers around on most days.
Howdy Mr. Steelhead, I’ll get you un-bottoned and released, don’t panic…
A true Klamath lunker folks! I suggest you give us a call soon and we can go out soon. info@jacktrout.com

These eggs I paint with Carola’s finger nail polish is really working on the steelhead, but don’t let that get out it’s a secret … Time to change the tippet folks..
It was so dry the other day, I just made a fire and cooked up lunch… Amazing!
Open flame on January 24th, 2014 on the side of the Klamath river, what would of Joaquin Miller thought or said about all this dryness.
We always enjoy Carola’s lunches, she knows how to prepare an excellent winter hot meal on the river. When you go out with a guide, demand a great lunch or call an outfitter and get fed right! Jack & Carola Trout
Now that’s a guide lunch worth paying for folks! Look forward to seeing you out on the river.
Boy, has it been dry, but finally I look outside and see very hard rains coming down. This is the ticket for more steelhead that need rains to drive their cause. I would seriously start making plans to come up and call your favorite North State steelhead guides because February and March are going to be a hot ticket in Northern California. If you are in need of a Bay Area exit give us a call. 530-926-4540
Wild steelhead female hen, a real beauty folks.
This is a place I see spawning endangered coho salmon, they like to be sneaky hug to edges that aren’t well known or well traveled. This time of year if you have to wade, look for areas on the river floor that are circles and the pebbles looked swept clean. Those are salmon redds or their eggs. Try not to walk on them and if possible, don’t wade right now try to float the rivers instead. Motors on the Upper Klamath River near Irongate Dam should be outlawed, especially when you consider how low the river is right now.
Another lunker on, wow what a great jump!
How fun was that Scott!
Scott thanks for a great day on the Klamath river, see you in the spring time. jt
“Best Fly Fishing Experience Ever”
I called Jack Trout last week with interest in his fly fishing guide service and asked him what the destination of choice was at the time. He seemed very happy to get my call and was extremely helpful in steering me to when and where the fishing was most productive. I was very excited to hear how well the fishing was on the Klamath River but let him know that my only option at the time was Sunday Jan 19. At the time there may have been a conflict with the booking but I was very impressed when he called me the next day and informed me that he would be happy to take me fishing Sunday.
At the time of booking the trip he also asked if I was bringing a guest and I let him know that I will have my wife and 13 year old daughter but due to the cold they would not be fishing with me. Both Jack and his wife were extremely considerate by emailing my wife local events and choice dining spots in the area while I was fishing.
Met Jack Sunday at 7:30 and headed to the river. It was cold in the morning but it was so much fun. Prior to the trip I explained to Jack that for so long I have been trying to catch a big trout but living in the Santa Rosa area has some limitations compared to the Northern Ca fishing.
He kept reassuring me that its gonna happen!!
That morning I hooked into a 7 lb beautiful steel head trout that was about 26″.
My first fish was the biggest I ever caught but I was also able to follow it up with a 5lb trout and my last fish was a 6lb Steel head that when air born when hooked.
I have been fly fishing for over 15 years but no doubt this day was the most productive and the greatest fishing experience I have had. I sure appreciated Jack sharing the enthusiasm and the high fives after each landing and also photographing each catch making it ever more memorable.
I feel I could not go any further without complimenting Jack’s wife for the fantastic lunch. After such a cold morning and with the warming sun in the afternoon I was highly impressed to eat a home cooked hot meal by the river. That was special! Thank you soo much Carola!! You both make a great team.
Jack was very personable and enjoyed the conversation and getting to know him. He is a very honest person who cares so much for people and wants to see his clients have the time of their lives. I also appreciated his openness in sharing his fishing experiences and his willingness to share what works.
If you are looking for a memorable fly fishing experience then go to Jack’s blog at mtshasta.com and give Jack a call.
Art Galicia is a client I first started in 1998, he’s fished all over since way back then and is an accomplished angler I might add. he hooked 6 steelhead on this day and landed everyone and that’s not easy to do!
We have all been surprised that there are a lot of fresh fish in the system now and after these rains we are receiving, pack your bags and head for Mount Shasta, Dusmuir and McCloud, the steelhead are running in full force and it would be great to have you up here again.
Truth is folks, I am worried for my area, there has been no snow and the hotels and restaurants are so slow right now, it’s like Bodie, NV.
Come up if you can, not only to fish, but also to hang out and spend some time in the three great towns that badly need your precious tourist dollars. Please consider it this winter, we are a very friendly area and the businesses here appreciate seeing you.
Art and I with a great catch on one of my favorite rivers in the world.
Nice steelhead, looks like she’s having a bad hair day….
Freshy fresh cromer!
Yahooooo! Look at him run down the stream!
Veteran angler Art Galicia, ladies and gentlemen with another beauty.
Sure like my Brodin net, with that long rubber ghost net and handle.
Art’s partner Pat had a great day too as he hooked 6 steelhead also.
It was beautiful day out there, it seemed as though we were cheating something or someone because here it was the end of January and it was almost 60 degrees with no wind and catching all these nice steelhead with not a soul around.
How about another!
Let’s a do a Chilean BBQ and grill up some steaks for lunch.
Yummy on a winter day out on the river.
We feel fortunate to have your business, when you come out with me, we’ll feed you well.
After lunch, it really turned on.
Way to go Art, thanks for sending me your friend who called me and wants to come up this next week, I owe you one for that!
Maybe one more for the road… That night Art & Pat ate at the Dunsmuir Brewery in Dunsmuir.
The next day we floated the Upper Sac near Shasta lake on a short stretch I have access to and we caught trout on dry flies and nymphs. It was real slow until mid day but then all these trout started rising to Blue Wing Olives and it was 3 hours of magic.
Wading was fun and we saw trout but the morning was so slow.
Then Pat hooked a very large trout on a nymph and it took him on a huge run.
Way to go Pat, some days you feel lucky just getting a hook-up, then it seems to usually turn on after that.
Love those red rosy cheeks, she could be a model.
That makes it worthwhile and since were practically fishing on Shasta Lake, that’s why the trout are so large.
Then we hit this slick and all these trout were rising to size 18 BWO.
Art hooked into a real lunker on a size 16 parachute adams.
It must be the Ted Fay Fly Shop hat, it was good luck.
Dry fly in the yapper.
I wish I caught that trout on a dry fly, that might be the first time I’ve ever wrote that. There was something about all those trout rising at 2pm that day, it was so cool to see the foam lines light up with trout heads slurpping away at the small mayflies.

On another day earlier this week some other clients caught some more great steelhead.

Floyd Packard, sure loved his trip with Sebastian our fly fishing guide in Coyhaique, Chile and caught many nice trout in Chile with him on the Rio Simpson right off the cruise ship in Aysen – Chacabuco Chile.
Trout after trout, he really enjoyed his day out on a fine Chilean river with no one else around.
Browns as well as rainbows were caught.
One more for the road, all these trout, you must of built up a nice appetite for dinner back on the ship.
Over in Patagonia the fishing is starting to get really good. Give us a call for your trip to Chile

We have moved to Hood River, OR. There is some decent fishing up here on Klickitat, the Hood, the Deschutes; not to mention the Columbia, etc. Will miss parts of CA for sure and will hopefully fish with Jack Trout on the Klamath in the not too distant future.
Have enjoyed your blogs for a long time and admire your passion and commitment.

Any fishing on this trip would be welcome, no matter who guides. I do want you and Carola to make the arrangements and get the commissions and then I want to write another story for Trip Advisor.com. I receive notices from them regularly saying things like 104 people have found your review helpful..
Mostly we are taking this trip to explore the two countries with our future in mind. I wanted to stay 3 weeks, but Davida thinks we should be able to do it in 2. More later. I am at work.
