Shasta Lilies are my favorite wild flower in the region. Sometimes these flowers grow as high at 5 feet and fill the Shasta/Trinity National Forest with a heavenly fragrance, similar to the wild Azalea that bloomed last month all along the Upper Sac. I usually find Shasta Lilies on my way to McCloud Reservoir, right at the top of the hill before you descend to the lake on the right and left sides of the road. From June 27th to July 18th, and all over in medium to mostly shaded areas about 3000 foot elevation plus or minus. The rhythms of the forest is ever changing daily occurrence.
Whether it’s a berry, wild flower or a bug… I’m on it for you!
I love this stuff like you do and will continue to share these wonderful guiding experiences with folks just like you. Lately I have been spending a lot of time with beginners and tourist on the Upper McCloud River. This time of year I get a lot of referrals from the Mt Shasta Resort http://www.mtshastaresort.com and others that know how well I take care of our valued customers! The more time I spend over on the McCloud River, the more I realize that Nestle Water needs to look else where for water. THE McCLOUD RIVER DOESN’T HAVE THE WATER TO SUPPORT WHAT NESTLE IS TRYING TO INFILTRATE! GOVERNOR ARNOLD – WALLY HERGER – CALIFORNIA DEPT WATER RESOURCES – HAVE YOU BEEN TO THE UPPER McCLOUD LATELY? THERE’S NO FRICKING WATER FOR NESTLE, THERE’S BARELY ENOUGH FOR ALL THE TOURIST AND TROUT!!! JACK TROUT
I wanted to do something to show all of you out there just how low the McCloud River is getting. This is on top of Middle Falls on the McCloud River. The water is so shallow I can walk any where. Trout that usually would have cover are looking for glory holes in the river where I find trout podded up just looking for some space to occupy. It must suck to be a trout and know that someday you could become homeless and have to leave the only area you ever knew….

Look at this water level, it’s the lowest I’ve EVER seen on the McCloud River. I’m thinking by August 15th, the Lower Falls jump might be suspect, be careful people, jumps off the tree stump should be examined first after August 15th. This whole water bit up here in the Shasta area reminds me a little of the hydraulic mining up in the Sierra’s back in the 1860’s. None of the companies that were mining cared that they were changing rivers and destroying the Sacramento Valley as the rivers were jumping right out of their banks taking tons of mountain silt and mud with them. Often the Sacramento Valley was so silted in, farms were covered in mud and dirt up to the barn roofs, cows were turned upside down and you could scrape your shins on the tops of trees. I bet you’re wondering how this has to do with all these water companies up here looking to take our resources and profits out of the area? Well like the mining in the 1860’s no one was mandated on how much water they could take or change. Like mining, extraction of water from lava tubes, these processes put man at odds against nature and their philosophy is to do what ever it takes to extract their profit out of the ground.

Nestle nor our County Supervisors are thinking about the future and how this could effect communities that are attached at the hip regarding tourism, the McCloud River or CALIFORNIA”S WATER FUTURE, THE WHOLE STATE FROM HERE DOWN. As we peak over the edge of the Middle Falls you can see that for me to be standing here, there’s not a lot of CFS…
(cubic feet per second, that’s to educate our SUPERVISORS, in Siskiyou CO. They’re dumb up north, model our county after Modoc…..DAH!)
And when I looked over the edge, all I could see was the spirit of the Winnemum Wintu rise up in front of my eyes with voices from the past coming from every direction. From that day on, I knew it was their river….

The Winnemum Wintu Tribe never got recognized as a California Nationally Native American Tribe. Heck, when you Google
Winnemum, it asks you if you want Minimum? Well that’s all this tribe has ever gotten, THE MINIMAL. I’m sure a meeting of the Skull and Bones kept these wonderful people right out of Congress. If I know these private McCloud River families and the way they operate, I’m sure these people got screwed and there’s no accident about it. I have had the Fisher’s (McCloud River Club) and their care-taker Dennis Berryman in the past years solicit my guides right out from underneath me for a $75 commission, these people are low and are only out for themselves.(The second time I warned them was the last time they ever saw me and my loyal guides out there. I will never guide any of these unethical and un-cooth clubs on the McCloud River that stand for nothing, and only take what they can with a bottom line method to make a profit on the McCloud River.
McCloud Private Clubs: You can’t build and live on the river and just do nothing like you always have. That would be like if I passed up picking up some litter. I pick up litter everyday I am on the river with a smile, it’s my responsibility since I work out here.

Siskiyou Lake is a place for vacationers! I think Siskiyou Lake in Mt Shasta, is one of the most beautiful lakes in our great State. I like to ride my bike on my days off and kick back on the huge shoreline.
Views in every direction, yet close to fine dining in our wonderful towns of Mt Shasta & Dunsmuir. Ya, you could say we still have a piece of heaven here!

of McCloud right next to the big flag on highway 89. Maybe then locals, Attorney Generals and Governors will know how important protecting heritage & culture can be. Also while recognizing the most important world trout transports in the history of mankind.

I love my baby Chailyn and Carola is the best mother ever!
So please come down to Chile from December to April this 2009 and I will have excellent places to fish you. We plan to operate out of Futaleufu or Puerto Montt. Either way, you will have several rivers to fish as we tour through Patagonia together. BROWN WARNS NESTLE OF LEGAL CHALLENGE TO WATER BOTTLING PLANT
SISKIYOU–Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. today warned Nestle that California will challenge the environmental plan for a bottled water plant in Siskiyou county if the company does not revise its contract to pump water from the McCloud River.
It takes massive quantities of oil to produce plastic water bottles and to ship them in diesel trucks across the United States, Attorney General Brown said. Nestle will face swift legal challenge if it does not fully evaluate the environmental impact of diverting millions of gallons of spring water from the McCloud River into billions of plastic water bottles, Brown added.
Although Nestle publicly offered to reduce its annual water take to 195 million gallons of spring water per year–enough to fill 3.1 billion 8-ounce plastic bottles–the company has not yet agreed to change the terms of its contract with the McCloud Community Service District. The current fifty-year contract permits the company to draw 520 million gallons of spring water each year and also to pump unlimited amounts groundwater.
In a letter sent to the Siskiyou County Planning Department, Attorney General Brown said that the environmental review for the previously proposed project had serious deficiencies, yet the proposed changes have not been memorialized in a formal document. Brown also said the suggested changes would require significant revision of the contract between Nestle and the McCloud Community Services District, a new, formal project proposal, and circulation of a new Draft Environmental Impact Report.
Brown also said the environmental analysis fails to consider the global warming impacts of producing and transporting millions of gallons of water including:
* Greenhouse gases from producing the plastic bottles
* Electrical demand for the project
* The diesel soot and greenhouse gas emissions from truck trips.
Ninety-six percent of bottled water in the United States is sold in plastic bottles produced from fossil fuels, typically natural gas and petroleum. It took 17 million barrels of oil, not including transportation energy, to produce all the plastic bottles for American consumption in 2006. It took 900,000 tons of the chemical polyetheylene terephathalate and produced 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide to produce all this plastic.
According to data from the Pacific Institute, it would take 1.768 million barrels of oil annually to manufacture 3.1 billion 8-ounce plastic bottles, caps and packaging to hold 195 million gallons of water.
The McCloud River is unique among California’s larger rivers in that most of its water derives from springs and underground lava aquifers rather than from rainfall or snowfall. The river and its associated riparian area provide habitat for over 200 wildlife specifies. The Lower McCloud has been designated a Wild Trout Stream by the state Department
of Fish and Game.
Attorney General Brown has asked the County of Siskiyou to revise its environmental impact report and circulate a new draft of the environmental impact report.
The bottling plant is proposed for construction at 909 Mill Street in McCloud California. A copy of the state’s letter is attached.

(07-30) 04:00 PDT Sacramento — Attorney General Jerry Brown said Tuesday that he will sue to block a proposed water-bottling operation in Northern California unless its effects on global warming are evaluated.
Nestle Waters North America wants to pump about 200 million gallons of water a year from three natural springs that supply McCloud, a Siskiyou County town about 280 miles north of San Francisco. Brown’s office said that is enough to fill 3.1 billion 8-ounce plastic bottles.
The water would be bottled at a 350,000-square-foot plant on the outskirts of the former lumber town.
The Swiss company scaled back its plans in May after years of opposition from environmentalists and a group of McCloud residents. It originally sought to pump more than double the amount of water.
David Palais, Nestle’s Northern California natural resource manager, said the company already was planning studies on air and water quality, hazardous materials, traffic conditions and climate change for a new environmental review of the bottling plant.
“We appreciate the attorney general’s letter and share his commitment to ensuring that new projects in California do not negatively impact the environment,” Palais said in a statement.
He said the company will conduct environmental studies over the next two or three years. Afterward, Siskiyou County will prepare a new environmental impact report for the project.
Brown said the company must put its revisions into a new contract with the town of McCloud. He wants proper study of the environmental consequences of the bottling operation, saying the previous review had “serious deficiencies.”
He said it failed to include an examination of whether the operation will contribute to global warming through the production of plastic bottles, the operation’s electrical demands and the diesel soot and greenhouse gas emissions produced by trucks traveling to and from the plant.

Jack, my father was Ted Fay, Dunsmuir Guide and back in the 1960’s he felt the same way as you do with these private club owners. As a kid I did not quite understand what he was talking about, as time went by the light came on. As I have said in the past, keep up the good work.

Thanks for the quick reply, Jack. Where would we be staying in Chile? What rivers would we fish? How about the walk and wade? Could we do other things during the day that would allow me to fish a couple of hours in the evening on my own? Places to see? etc? I have to make a case for activities besides fishing. How is travel in Chili if we rent a car and do some traveling before, after or even during our stay. Would probably like to fish a couple of days, take a day or two off, fish some more— You will find that now that you have a wife compromise is the key.
What kind of deposit would you require? paid by when?
We are pretty laid back, Jack, and go with the flow. The local people and culture are of interest to us.
