NOVEMBER PROVES TO BE A GREAT STEELHEAD MONTH ON THE KLAMATH & TRINITY RIVER

 The steelhead season is here folks! Pat Titus from the USFS enjoyed his catches on the Klamath River in late October. 

 Greg enjoyed his first time ever fly fishing for steelhead and caught many adult steelhead on the Upper Klamath.

 Beefy hard fighting trout that come in from the ocean folowing the salmon migration ready to munch eggs.

 A very fun day indeed with Pat Titus and Greg Leptich fighting big salmon and steelhead on 7 weight fly rods, couldn’t of been better! (At least that’s what they said.)

 Now it’s time to step back in time and revisit the Shasta Springs Resort around 1908, they had this incredible lift up from the rail station to the resort located up on top of the hill.

 It was a very interesting time of discovery as the rugged Sacramento Canyon was now a place for the affluent to come and visit. Some ended up passing through, some ended up staying forever, these folks literally carved this territory home.

 Everything about that era was impressive, the men dressed the dress with suit and bow ties and women wore the hats spoke of statement and class, I would like to have been witness to such an incredible place and time in the Shasta history book.

 After a nice lunch, a stroll down the tracks to Mossbrae Falls was definitely in order.

 Here’s Mount Shasta around 1925, it was called Sisson before then. No highway 5 out in the meadow they just got electricity about 10 to 15  years previous. A very interesting time in the history of this area, yet not a lot has really changed around here since. “If you haven’t heard a rumor by 11 am, go start one…”

 My clients for years Al Hagerdorn, with a lovely catch in the Upper Klamath after we floated the lower river canyon the previous day. Thanks again for coming up hope to see you both out in my raft in the spring.

 Carola and I had a free day and we decided to head for a steelhead day of our own, we love what we do for all of you so why not get back out where life is easy and the trees are your only witness.

 Right away we rowed up on this salmon redd, Carola hooked into a huge steelhead that took into her backing and fought for about 10 minutes until it finally became un-bottoned. Oh well, what a great fight people!

 I like to fish the Lower Klamath with clients and friends then ride my bike back to the put in to retrieve the car. Note, keys should be in a zippered pocket out on the water, but what a nice steelhead trout! This is the best time of year for the avid fly fisher, there’s so much going on right now!!

(Don’t need waders on the warmer days, you don’t want to wade in the river and harm the salmon eggs trying to produce the next generation of fish.)

 Beef sure loves his life! We sure love Beef, the best guide dog since Shasta Trout (RIP 1994 to 2005)

Sure miss the best guide dog ever Shasta Trout, sadly the dog died of poisoning in 2005 and I never figured out how? I always love and remember the many years the dog was out with me on hundreds of guide trips.

 Nice trout babe! I always like seeing Carola catch trout, it might be my favorite pass time. Love that huge stone we bought ya in Argentina, looking good! Hey folks Argentina has the value going over anywhere else in the world, a must visit country as well as Chile! (Chile 3 times more expensive.)

 A little further down river Chuleta (Pork Chop) hooks into another hard fighting trout.

 

 When you head into this class 3 1/2 rapid it’s good to be with an experienced rafting guide, this rapid is a lot of fun when you know what’s up.

 

 Wow, that’s a rush for sure!

 Marjorie Smith is a doctor in Yreka and called me as she had gone many trips with legends in fly fishing Mel & Fannie Krieger back in the 1980’s & 90’s. We had a great time talking about the olden days in fly fishing and the pioneers who brought the sport out in the open.

 The water is always awesome down the Klamath canyon, especially after a good rain.

 She caught 8 adult steelhead that day, it was a real hoot!

 What a beauty to land! The steelhead in this river are going off this year, what a great year to consider a trip on the Klamath River.

 At lunch, Carola, Marjorie, Beef and I ran into this gold miner Jim on this beach where he pans for gold on and has mining claims. Last trip he wasn’t there but I needed a place that was flat to have lunch on. All his equipment was every where and I was a little scared to have lunch there with all the stories from the past of disgruntle miners who don’t like other Humans on their Klamath mining claims. So I left a box of powered donuts as a sacrificial sign of friendship and goodwill. I remembered the stories of Sir Francis Drake landing by ship for first time in the Tamales Bay near San Francisco (Petaluma area) in the late 1500’s and the Miwok Indians thought their ancestors had returned from the dead and started weeping and hitting their faces as though life was going to come to an end. But Drake brought lots of gifts to shore and the Indians later on helped him out and due to a hole in Drakes injured ship a buried treasure is still missing between Lawsons Landing and San Francisco Bay including gold, Ming pottery and coins. When I saw Jim for the first time I thought of all these things at once and he approach us, though he was very nice. I mentioned I was the one who left the powdered donuts and Jim commented, ” So the powdered donuts mystery is over!” Then he went on to say how most folks only take equipment from his sites and he was impressed that someone would leave a gift. He then took some soil and started panning it until he finally had only black soil. We were all enthralled with Jim’s knowledge of the area, he explained how this area was in between an up leveling caused by volcanic eruptions and glaciers that rolled through the area matched with tremendous erosion which all helps make the Klamath rich in valuable minerals. He went on to explain that gold can be found in several types of rocks along the river unlike other areas. None of us said a word, as he went on to explain that there were rocks in the vicinity that were brought in by glaciers from Greenland. I was impressed how much this guy knew about history and his strong environmental commitment to the area was mentioned in his rhetoric in addition to how genuinely nice this guy was to us. Miner Jim was truly precious and a living Klamath history book Sizzlers, we learned a lot at lunch!

 Then in front of our eyes a gold nugget appeared and we all gasp in awe as Jim made our day better!

 Then he left us and went back across the river in his kayak and we enjoyed Carola’s wonderful lunch, he thanked us again for the powdered donuts, left us cool rocks and waived goodbye. That was the most friendly miner I had ever met and he was from the Klamath River? I had bought 4 lamb shanks at Raley’s in Yreka earlier that morning and presented him with one for his dinner. He said, he doesn’t see a lot of lamb down that far in the canyon and thanked us again.

I guess those stories of mean ole miner men is over on the Klamath River. Which leads me to adventure, what kind of State would we become if we actually could break away from California and made our own of State of Jefferson. Would it be a State of Jefferson Davis or a State of Thomas Jefferson? First being, the Presdident of the Confederate forces, the second, the greatest land procurer President of all time. (3 cents per acre won’t break the bank and that was before prop 13. What the hell did those Whigs know anyway those tight wads never wanted anything new, especially if it made sense, after giving Jefferson grief the party later parrished.) 🙂  I would hope we would honor Thomas Jefferson and not be a bunch of rebels out on an island. What about that flag design? Yellow and two X X’s was that for someones eyes that laid hungover in flight? Might want to go with some new design maybe with Mt Shasta on it or Thomas Jefferson himself, he did help double the size of the United States and we bought out France, great buy if you ask me . jt

 After lunch the steelhead fishing turned on and we caught a lot of nice trout on eggs.

 Then we caught this lovely trout!

Get a California fishing regulation hand book or look up online before you go and know the regulations on the piece of water you are fishing. Game Wardens will not accept a lack of knowledge as an excuse and the tickets are about $500 now.
