By Jack Trout, on August 14th, 2013 Klamath River * Trinity River * Lower Sacramento River * Upper Sacramento River * Pit River * Fall River * Hat Creek – BOOKING TRIPS ON ALL LOCAL NORTH STATE RIVERS, CALL US FOR INFORMATION OR TO GIVE JACK A RASHTION!! (The guide who thinks he knows so much! Oh baloney Trout, you old hound dog.)
WE ARE NOT GOING TO CHILE OR BELIZE UNTIL DECEMBER THIS YEAR SO WE CAN GUIDE STEELHEAD SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER OR NOVEMBER, DECEMBER. 🙂 530-926-4540
Fall fishing is just around the bend, hope to see you out there for our favorite time of year!
Fish ladder study going in on Shasta Dam!! I think I’m going to cry… jt
Ah, the great outdoors, it’s always waiting here for you and me. Thanks for tuning in for another adventure from Jack & Carola Trout.
This has been one of the driest lowest water seasons I’ve ever seen in 22 years of guiding. When it’s this dry and the river flows are this low, Shasta lake becomes a river and we can catch tons of bass floating down to Lake Head, Ca. Many beginners are thrilled with not only learning fly fishing for the first time but catching double digits there first time out fly fishing.
That’s why Roger Harper while vacationing in Redding, California called Jack Trout Fly Fishing Guide International for a trip on the Sacramento River. He had so much fun on one day he booked another trip a week later for he and his wife.
Fly Fishing on the Upper Sac in July and August has been great. The temps were very hot but all in all we caught fish and stayed hydrated. We all know fall and a lot of rain is just around the corner, it’s coming early this year people.
Great lunch and happy clients is what we’re all about.
Teaching the youth how to fly fish is also a priority here at Jack Trout Guide Service.
Kids have terrific fishing right in their back yard. Say hello to the camera Brian!
Hello Camera! That’s a huge speckled small mouth bass, way to go on the fly scene bro!
In these temps we endured in July & August, the trout were stressed and needed a break. I have never seen this before, but this was the driest July I have ever experienced. Now in mid August, the mornings are a lot colder and the river temp went down 4 to 7 degrees compared to July and this has perked the trout bite back up.
Wyatt & Casey enjoyed their day out on the Upper Sac fly fishing for trout & bass. Casey with a nice trout on the line.
Way to go Casey & Wyatt, that’s a great hook-up! This was Wyatt’s first day fly fishing, he had a great day.
The release, not over rated!!
Next the Silver’s Family from Santa Rosa! Teaching kids is our specialty, but we also welcome entire families for our fly fishing- scenic tour experiences including stream side gourmet lunches.
That day everyone caught bass on the fly rod, even the dog!
The thrill of the first fish ever caught is a bond that a father, mother and a son will never forget.
Now that’s what I’m talking about! Way to go Sizzler!
These pictures are hilarious! Kids out having fun with their parents while fishing is got to be one of the guide highlights of the season.
Glad we could make it happen here at Jack Trout Guide Service.
Right on Bill Silver! What a great father, Bill is a prof at Sonoma State University, he teaches business classes. They found me on Tripadvisor searching for fly guides that are good instructors for kids.
Then Will Moss came up from the Silicon Valley to try his hand at fly fishing.
A nice brook trout is always a good catch just about anywhere folks.
You can catch them right now in the evenings on dries using a Green Drake size 12, with the colder mornings the big mays have been sighted.
George Paris and his son Ethan came up to see me and float the Upper Sac down to Shasta Lake for a second year. In this family when dad wants a bite of their banana split sundae, the kids often say “Dad, don’t take a George Bite Please!”
Ethan and Beef, out catching fish on a nice day in July, what could be better. This is Ethan’s second year of fly fishing.
These bass like purple….?
This is a good year to be a lizard, lots of heat and buffets of bugs everywhere out on the water.
When we instruct beginners we like to put the students right on top of the fish, this way they learn to cast and catch all in the same day.
Ethan, way to go a nice McCloud River Rainbow to add to your repertoire. (That’s a big word for a fishing guide… 🙂 )
Another great trout dude!
One of the highlights is always Carola’s lunch, we try to put out a terrific meal, one you won’t soon forget.
George Bite took the plunge!! That’s some cold water bro.
Then Cameron, came up his dad Robert and a friend named Gustav for a fun filled day of fishing and floating.
Cameron hooked this huge squaw fish on his fly rod and gave him a enormous fight, he said he had the time of his life.
Mike Moser of Mill Valley, came a calling next and we hooked up on many nice bass on a hot mid summer trip on August 8th.
Don’t get lippy now fish!
What fun retreat with constant fly fishing action on a 6 1/2 mile floating adventure!
ZEN and more ZEN.
On another day I got a call from my old clients and buddies TomHawk – Tom Hawkins and Burke his favorite side-kick. They were sending up a friend and business acquaintance Mark & Janet McNamee for a first time ever fly fishing. His wife came along for the scenic part, taking photos of hubby and Carola’s fine cuisine.
Now that’s a nice first trout ever! Mark McNamee of Oakland, California ~ You’re My Sizzler Of The Week Award Winner!
Very photogenic trout, I approve. You out to be in pictures!
They are talking about a feasibility meeting this month to see about the possibilities of building a passage through Shasta Dam for the steelhead and salmon. I talked about this years ago and was laughed at. I sure hope we can pull this off, it would mean so much to the rebound of the wild pacific salmon and the wild steehead that have been denied access to the hills and springs that generations before them relied on to pass the torch of life. I have always said if I got stuck on my honeymoon in Redding, Oroville or Hornbrook, California, I would be depressed and declining also. It’s like a bowling lane, fish need springs, access to deep holes like on the Trinity river. The water just above Shasta Lake where the Upper Sac first flows in near Lakehead is just like the water you see on the Trinity where salmon and steelhead spawn, it’s incredible folks. Holes like 20 feet deep, just waiting for a chinook or a steelhead to chill out. I hope in my lifetime like on the Bonnerville Dam on the Columbia, we can get these ocean fish over the Shasta Dam back to where they belong, it’s been almost 70 years and I think it’s time. Dunsmuir’s economy could use the shot in the arm, could you imagine Dunsmuir being like Weaverville in the winter, full of steelhead enthusiast, spending money, hooting it up at local bars and adding to a dimension that was lost in the wind when the Shasta dam was finished in 1946 without any way for returning fish to get over the Gorbi-wall. (Please read info at the bottom of the post, is very interesting as a meeting is on for this month for a study.)
The Shasta Dam Fish Passage Evaluation Landowner and Stakeholder Workshop will include an overview of the project background, purpose and approach, and seek to collaborate with attendees on topics such as fish health and genetics, existing habitat, fish passage techniques, and experimental approaches. Food for thought… Micro May, green size 18.
Janet & Mark loved Carola’s chicken drumstick lunch with potatoes and veggies! Yummy.
Out on the Lower Sac, guide Matt Mitchell and client are having great fishing since the flows started decreasing.
Over on the Trinity river, Kalani & Forrest hooked and landed this wonderful Chinook this past week and are guiding clients right now. Give us a call for a salmon or steelhead trip on the Trinity river while dates are still open.
Now that’s what’s for dinner folks, the other red meat!
Just the other day we had a client catch this huge brown on the Trinity, he was pretty happy about that catch.
Another client with a nice brown caught with Matt Mitchell on the Trinity river.
Lower Sac trips are really picking now that the flows are tinkering down, September will be off the charts on the Lower Sacramento.
Leaches = Black Crystal Buggers, this was found by Matt in the Lower Sac
Fall River has been great lately, we can guide you anytime on our section we guide. (Under radar right now)
Lower Sac is marvelous, hope to guide you out there! Team Trout – 530-926-4540

CAVES BRANCH BELIZE – A JUNGLE ADVENTURE RESORT

Jack Trout from the United States visited us and attempted one of our cave adventure tours with a group of clients at Caves Branch. He wrote a blog featuring the awesome adventure and one of our tour guides, Abel. Here is a photo of Jack and Abel.
In Belize, Central America, there is a place where the Mayans once prayed to their gods in a cave with river running through it. I took the Gebhart family to place I knew deep in mountains of Belize, where mystic rules and tales of legend lurk deep behind the orange orchards that grow in the fields that lay in front of one of man’s most coveted secrets. To experience it one must float by innertube and once back far in the cave the Monkey Goddess of Fertility would be there to greet us. So we picked our tubes up and headed out to see it first-hand! Once in the river we could see the cave entrance and a rock that extended down in the doorway that resembled a snakes head!!”
“Once inside the cave the inside grew tall and it was like being transformed to another world as the lights got darker and darker. The group was having fun paddling through the shallow river that ran out of the cave. Cindy thought the water was the perfect temp. Travis floated over a very deep section of river and everyone laughed as they floated deep within the cave’s walls. As we entered a very sacred area of the cave, I could feel and see the energy that was running through us all! It was like the Ancient Mayans were trying to communicate through Cindy’s headlamp! Wow, what a trip it reminded me of the Winterland Concerts!!!
“After that epic adventure we landed on shore to view some of the cave life critters. We saw bats….. Very close up! This cool crayfish- like, out of Jurassic park!! That ruled out skinny dipping for me!! … Then we ran into this awesome huge cave spider, this guy looked as old as the walls! I reached out and held him in my hand knowing these crusty critters are harmless.”
“Our head guide Abel has been my friend and guide for almost ten years, led us like he has led so many other tours in his native surroundings. He has guided the Discovery Channel several times and was getting ready to explore another series of ceremonial caves with Discovery in a later date that he had discovered on his own one year ago on his birthday. Abel is an amazing interpeter and ambassador for his ancestry explaining to us the history and use of the cave by the Maya for religious and sacraficial purposes.”
“The ceremonial crystal drum. Ceremonies were performed here before the sacrafices were taken up 60 feet to another level in the cave. Here’s us taking the 60 foot climb about 1 mile back in the cave at least! The Gebharts were really loving this trip and everyone was inthralled by the Mayan Lore. After a nice climb we got up to the flat part and everything leveled out and we were 60 feet up looking down on the river. Everytime I’m up here it always amazes me that something so mystic, so out of a book, so out of my wildest dreams, could be so real right here in front of my face. I can tell you this folks, this is where they get the ideas for Indiana Jones films. Everywhere you looked, you could see broken pottery, chards of broken artifacts or a carving. You could feel Maya amongst us and we were happy folk, no threat just interested in the stories Abel had to tell us.”
“Abel explained to the Gebharts that the Maya were very superstitious and felt that the seasons were only delivered by the amount of sacrafices that were presented to the gods. The world was thought to be square, and the inter-world was where the gods lived inside the cave… So the Mayans would go out into the forest previous to the ceremony and pick silicidal mushrooms and other hallucinogenic herbs from the jungle that were so potient that they couldn’t be taken orally. The sacraficial lambs were then given the herbs to better enable them to talk to their gods, as an enhancer the Maya used fires in the caves and that would cast reflections on the cave walls. Godly shadows would appear and would play with their drug filled minds just before being pushed off the 60 foot ledge only to venture off into the after-world with a big fat smile on their face!”
“These pictures I’m taking do not show how dark it really was in the cave. When the lamps were shut off you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face. Through another chamber we were led then into one of the most coveted chambers… Off in the distance up in the highest reaches of the cave you could see little statuettes of what was believed by the Mayans as monkey gods. That was amazingly beautiful, what a chamber to be witnessed. Back down the 60 foot cliff, we went on another tube ride deeper into the cave to see another Mayan pearl!”
“In another area deeper in the cave we could see what seemed to be shelves as flat as a table. These caves were formed milions of years previous by the higher ocean levels receding in and out against the limestone that would eventually give way to a series of tunnels that were left that became an aquaduct for the springs that flowed off the Mayan Mountains which in turned formed a river from the inside flowing out. Were actually going against the current, the river flowed out of the cave.”
“Back on our tubes the current took us for a nice ride, we shut off our head lamps and it was hard to tell if we were moving, you couldn’t see a thing… We then floated out of the cave and the rest was burned into the basement of time as history shined on us that day and we all felt good about what we had learned in the inter-world. Abel drove us in mini school bus, it was classic! Everyone was so happy and the vibe was great. What a fun filled day, little did we know it wasn’t nearly over. Back at the ranch, we saw a King Snake in some tropical leaves and Abel caught it so I could share it with you. These snakes look very much like the deadly Coral Snake, I always suggest to use guides in Central America, snakes are found throughout the region.”
Caves Branch can be quite exciting for any adventurer! Please be sure to check if Caves Branch is right for you. You can also visit Jack Trout’s blog to see more fabulous pictures and funny descriptions and other personal thoughts and jokes about some of the things that he saw on his tour. It was definitely an adventure worth talking about. Thank you for such a wonderful story, Jack – Hope to see you again soon!

Subject: Shasta Dam Fish Passage Evaluation Landowner and Stakeholder Workshop
Hello,
The Bureau of Reclamation in partnership with the National Marine Fisheries Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, California Department of Water Resources, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, California Water Board, and the University of California, will be hosting a landowner and stakeholder workshop focused on initial planning tasks to evaluate the feasibility of reintroducing Chinook salmon ianto tributaries above Shasta Lake. We invite you to attend.
The Shasta Dam Fish Passage Evaluation Landowner and Stakeholder Workshop will include an overview of the project background, purpose and approach, and seek to collaborate with attendees on topics such as fish health and genetics, existing habitat, fish passage techniques, and experimental approaches.
The workshop will be held:
Lakehead Lions Club
Tuesday, Aug. 27, 6-8 p.m.
20814 Mammoth Drive, Lakehead, CA 96051
Reclamation initiated the Shasta Dam Fish Passage Evaluation in response to the June 4, 2009, issuance of the Reasonable and Prudent Alternative (RPA) Action V in the Biological and Conference Opinion (BO) on the Long-Term Operation of the Central Valley Project (CVP) and the State Water Project (SWP) by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). The BO concluded, in part, that CVP and SWP operations were likely to jeopardize the continued existence of salmonids protected under the Federal Endangered Species Act. For CVP operations, the BO set forth an RPA that obligates Reclamation to evaluate the feasibility of reintroducing federally-listed Sacramento River winter-run, Central Valley spring-run Chinook salmon and Central Valley steelhead upstream of Shasta, Folsom and New Melones dams. Reclamation has begun the process of evaluating the feasibility of fish passage over Shasta Dam, and is in the process of collecting stakeholder feedback and relevant Chinook salmon habitat data in the key watersheds upstream from Shasta Dam. Reclamation is also looking at potential fish passage options to determine the feasibility of passage over Shasta Dam.
For additional information on the Shasta Dam Fish Passage Evaluation visit Reclamation’s website at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/BayDeltaOffice/Documents/Shasta_Fish_Passage/index.html or contact John Hannon, Fisheries Biologist, Bureau of Reclamation, Bay Delta Office, Science Division at 801 I Street, Suite 140, Sacramento, CA 95814-2536, jhannon@usbr.gov, or 916-414-2413.
