The water falls from lava tubes form Mount Shasta and feeds the entire state of California, these pure springs are the ancient aquafers of life.
Mount Shasta 14, 162 feet, waiting for its white winter coat to come along as it’s been a long dry summer but at last a storm is brewing, 3 days after that horrible Weed fire that took 143 homes and stranded about 1000 people’s lives. Our heart and wishes go out to those folks in this time of need. Life can be so unfair, so live it up while you still have shelter. Give me some shelter….
The ancient glaciers that carved these high banks came from the peaks of Mount Shasta back when water ruled California. Now the sun and dry rule and we’re all getting tired of it.
Looking down the river, the conditions right now to go out and fish are incredible.
Lots of hook-ups and fun times is what I’m talking about!
Beautiful trout being caught right now. I would give a call and book a trip for fall. 530-926-4540 or info@jacktrout.com
Hallalujah, fall is here folks!
My wife’s streamside gourmet lunches like no other outfitter provides. You can count on that too.
I am so impressed how good the Lower Sac has been fishing and it should continue as steelhead season progresses, many leave the Sac River to chase steelhead on the Klamath & Trinity Rivers.
You Ought To Be In Pictures…..
A few lunkers being landed too, this is a really fun time to get out ont he Lower Sac and you’d be almost guaranteed to have a wonderful day of catching trout.
Steve flew up in his small engine aircraft with his nephew to fly fish with me on the Lower Sacramento River in Redding, California. We immediately started hooking trout.
Then Alex hooked a lunker that took him on thunderous battle.
What a real beauty, that river has so many nice trout and right now they are really fattening up gorging on salmon spawning laying their eggs.
Look at those spawning salmon over, doing their duty for the next generation of Chinook when they come a running.
Deer and a squirrel in our backyard feeding on our apple trees, it’s that time of year folks.
This is my little buddy, he always is around the yard looking for his next meal.
Howdy Deer, have at it!
Moving on to new developments, Captain Blake Turner is enjoying his first day of retirement from the United States Navy. The Lower Sacramento River is a great place to go when it’s all over….
This was one of our finest officers and he spent over 3 decades serving in duty, hadn’t picked up a fly rod for 14 years and within 20 minutes he had his first fish.
Standing proud, it was an honor to have another captain on my boat and you could tell he was impressed with how I handled the waters.
Right on Blake, way to go landing your first trout in 14 years like a coup.
Trout after trout as we headed down the mighty Lower Sac, the Captain was having the time of his life!
Then a lunker broke us off and the Captain landed this lunker, that I thought was four pounds, 20 inches.
Then further down past the Cypress Bridge, we landed more trout as the activity got even better.
Little cutie if you ask me…
Beef Butt in back having a great day too!
When I have days like this it really makes me so happy I am a guide. i was truly honored that Blake’s wife and Sister had called on Jack Trout Guide Service to help Blake catch trout on his first day of retirement.
Sexy Filet Minon that gets put back in the river everytime! Don’t you love trout porn…
I love this job man! Thanks Blake for being such a great client, you’re respected by all that matter.
Then a hook-up by the old bridge from 1884, stages used to cross here their way to Old Shasta.
Sweet! Blake went on to say this was by far the best day of fishing he could ever remember in his life.

Do you like gold as much as me? I like to pan for gold especially on these low water years.
Occasionally, you can find a few nuggets if you know where to look.
My best friends specimen case is always an adventure with me! So the next time you’re out fly fishing, do a little panning on the side, you might just wind-up with a huge nugget! (No power equipment folks, that’s not right.)
Back to Portola High School when I grew up and went to school. (Some might argue about the growing up part.)
I want to run through schools of my high school, I want to scream at the top of my lungs.
One of my favorite teacher’s from Portola High, Mr. Stentzel my art teacher! What a great mentor and teacher as he drew up the first logo for Jack Trout Guide Service back in 1993.
After the Weed fire that took so much from our community a huge lenticular roled in and dropped 2.30 inches of rain.
If not, that fire might still be burning out of control. Thanks to all those who donated, money, clothes, food or time.
Carola in Forest Gump’s seat at the Bubba Gump Restaurant in Monterey. Then we went to the Monterey Aquarium.

We are 2 months out from our trip to Patagonia and already received fantastic service from Jack Trout. They saved us hundreds of dollars on our in-country flights which will more than make up for the cost of the day-fishing trip we have planned with him. Cant wait to see what he has in store for us next!

“Fly Fishing the Lake District of Chile with Jack Trout”
Reviewed December 22, 2013 via mobile
My family and I went down to Pucon in the Lake District of Chile this November and it was a given that we would dedicate some time to do some fly fishing. Once we got in touch with Jack Trout (found via Google) and his wife Carola, we didn’t need to look any further. Both of them were absolutely incredible and put so much time and effort into our planning
The trip itself was wonderful. My family (wife and two teen age boys) had such a great day on the Rio Rahua and all caught big, beautiful browns and rainbows. The guides, Edgar and Esteban, were excellent guides with great senses of humor. My kids had such a fun time with Esteban. These guys worked really hard and served us a wonderful stream side lunch with salmon, beer and wine. Excellent day.
Jack and Carola were also more than happy to assist us with our other plans. Pucon is known as the adventure capital of Chile’s Lake District and we were looking to also do a volcano hike, horseback riding and zip lining. They put us in touch with their pal Willy Hatcher at Sol y Nieve Pucon Adventures who I would also recommend to anyone (see my separate review about them).
All in all, Jack Trout runs a top notch operation and I wish more businesses would show the same level of service to their customers that we experienced with Jack, Carola and their guides. Next time we hope to fish with Jack out near Mt. Shasta.

“Another superb fishing and touring experience with Team Trout”

Last year I went solo. This year I brought my wife and we had a wonderful, fun-filled all around fishing, touring, dining and shopping experience! Jack and Carola attended to all,of the endless details from excellent lodging and dining reservations, to booking the most knowledgeable and professional local fishing guides, to dealing with border crossing challenges between Chile and Argentina (of which there are many potential land mines,) to filling us in on endless interesting cultural, historical and localized highlights of our travels. Their Toyota was rugged but also very comfortable for long drives too. I can’t praise them enough for their commitment to excellent services with a smile for their clients and authentic friendliness and caring spirits. They’re the greatest! We look forward to our next adventure with them?…

“Jack and Carola Trout are the ne plus ultra of Chilean fishing hosts”
Reviewed April 11, 2013
I have flyfished Chile 12 out of the last 13 years, always in Feb or March to miss the biting black flies and school kid crowds. In that time I have had probably 40 different guides in all kinds of boats. This was the first year I wanted to fish both in Chile and in Argentina. I had fished with Jack and Carola one time previous, but just in the Los Lagos area of Chile, headquartered in Pucon, a lovely town. Trout put together a ten day adventure, 5 days each country and made all local arrangements, found places to safely keep his boat at night, provided equipment and instruction for my wife. He and Carola created a fabulous, memorable trip. Lunches on the rivers were spectacular. Their patience and kindness with a learning fly fisherwoman much appreciated. Important to note here, the Argentine web site which one must navigate from home before your trip is not at all clear even to someone who has to speak spanish every day (we live in Tucson). It would have been VERY EASY to have goofed up the Argentinian Reciprocity Fee section of their website and to have been turned away at the border. Carola and Jack took care of all that for us. Carola knows everyone at the border and is friendly with the folks you must interact with who speak a dialect. Jack supplies equipment to the guards so they love him. On crowded days you would have to wait in line outside in the cold, rain, and wind, but not if you are with Jack and Carola. There is no cable, no internet, just a wooden building with a fireplace and you could literally spend a half day there if you were behind a tour bus crossing, with only two guards working. The Argeninians just don’t care. Trout cares. The hotel they arranged in San Martin de los Andes was immaculate, friendly, and we made abundant use of the indoor pool, spa, steam, sauna, and internet. The Argentinian guides and drivers Trout arranged were punctual, skilled, and bilingual. Highest praise for them and to the Trouts for all they did for us. We will be back!

Ask clyder510 about Jack Trout Fly Fishing
What can I say here? I told Jack via email that this trip was the trip of a lifetime for me (thus far, I’m still a youngster), and he and his fantastic wife comprehensively over-delivered. At much discomfort and hassle to both Jack and Carola, the two of them spoiled me with incredible hospitality, long hours on the water, fantastic food and impromptu, context-heavy tour guiding. In 6 days with Team Trout, I fished 5 rivers all over the Lakes District in Chile and caught 5 species of fish, including some seriously gorgeous sea-run browns and solid silver Atlantic Salmon.
Doing guided trips is an expensive endeavor, so I’ve always tried to maximize my money by getting as much instruction and insight from a guide as possible. Jack didn’t disappoint in this regard – he helped and encouraged me as I gradually refined my casting technique, and I’m happy to say that by the second-to-last day on the water with him, I was ripping off one 50-foot double haul after another, placing the casts exactly where I’d wanted them. This was a quantum leap for me, and a huge step in my education as an angler.
It’s hard to say what the highlight was for me. It may have been the 5lb. NFL football of a brown that I caught on the trippy Rio Maullin, or it might have been towing across a lake, James Bond-style to catch a slow 4-mile float on private water, or maybe it was the scenery. After some reflection though, I’d say that the highlight was the camaraderie. Jack and Carola, as we’d say where I’m from in Minnesota, “aren’t half bad.” Which, if you listen to a lot of Garrison Keillor, ought to strike you as high praise.
Jack and Carola went so far above and beyond to accomodate me and my Dad on our annual father-son trip that it defies logic. From making us hotel recommendations to pointing us in the direction of killer food not covered by guide books to driving me all around the Lakes District, Team Trout are incredibly good at what they do. Jack even listened to me prattle on about my beer obsession and surprised me with one of the most incredible beers I’ve had – Kunstmann Gran Torobayo – during lunch my last day out.
If it’s not clear yet, I cannot recommend Team Trout highly enough. They’re diligent, hugely friendly, funny, sweet, hard-working and genuinely warm people. It says a lot about Jack that he’s been guiding for 20+ years – you’d never survive that long if you were a jerk, or if you weren’t great at what you do.
Book a trip with Jack and Carola – as many days as possible – and bring your Ibuprofen. Your casting hand is going to need it.
“JACK TROUT – A FLYFISHING GUIDE SUPERHERO!”
Reviewed April 2, 2012
Jack Trout should have his very own Superhero television or comic book series! This gentlemen and goodwill ambassador from America is a combination of legendary frontiersmen like Davey Crockett or Daniel Boone and modern day crime-buster characters like Batman or the The Green Lantern.
In real life, Jack and his wife and business partner Carola – a soft Chilean beauty with a fierce Mapuche bloodline – operate (in this writer’s opinion) the very best hands-on fly-fishing guide service in the Western Hemisphere – Jack Trout International. But that “real life” description doesn’t begin to do justice to their larger-than-life personalities, energy and enthusiasm for their trade. In addition to Jack’s daily taming of Chile and Argentina’s wild and beautiful rivers and streams – catching and carefully releasing endless numbers of magnificent Browns, Rainbows and Salmon – he’s also educating everyone connected to or interested in fly-fishing by demonstrating the very best business practices in an industry notorious for its marginal standards. He does this with the zealousness of a crime fighter – chasing down evil-doers from poachers to litterbugs to just plain bad seeds in the industry in order to preserve the pristine nature wherein he works.
I just spent ten incredible days with Jack and Carola being guided and taken care of and shown the most beautiful places on God’s green Earth. I’ve been very fortunate in my 62 years of life to have traveled extensively around the world and have experienced every level of expertise and professionalism in the travel world from top to bottom. My family and I were one of the first groups to spend a full week on the world-renowned Nomads of the Sea expedition in 2007. That was a one-of-a-kind, fantastic experience. But I can honestly say that ten days with Jack and Carola was the best fishing and touring vacation I have ever experienced!
In a short testimonial, a person can’t fully explain what the “best of the best” is. I can only express that this couple should be starring in their own TV Reality series titled –
The Adventures of Jack Trout: Fly-Fishing Guide Superhero.
We have something in mind for you this fall and winter, let us be your guides. Jack & Carola Trout and the Team Trout Guides.
