So after we left the private water ranch first day fishing we arrived at our lodge in Futaleufu. Steve and Michael had nothing but great things to say about their first day fly fishing and Michael’s first day ever! It was great weather, sunny in the high 70’s and we were living large. The views in every direction were awesome as the Andes looked down at us
from everywhere we drifted, stood or stared.
One day Steve, Michael and Nico went out on a Lagoona/Lake and caught big trout on Chernoble Ants. This one was hot, too hot to handle!
Now that’s what we come to Patagonia for!
Steve was really coming into his own and realized the practice we had the first day was the beneficial for fighting and landing big fish like this. Of course Nico is an excellent instructor out on the water. Everyday they got better and so did the catches!
Michael learning high stick nymphing on the Rio Espolon. Isn’t that a beautiful colored river!
Back on the lagoona/lake, Steve lands another rainbow.
That night at our lodge Fernando makes up some pisco sours, a traditional Chilean drink that tastes so good! Everyone loves pisco sours but just remember, no more than two or you’ll feel them the next day. (pisco is a liquor made from distilled white grapes until it becomes like gin. Chileans call the art of making pisco, piscology. It reminds me of the Hawkeye Pierce days on M.A.S.H you know in their tent..)
At every restaurant, lodge or local hangout in Chile you will find Pebre(salsa). It’s not like Mexican Salsa though. It’s a little less spicy and more flavorable. Chileans don’t like spicy things, they like kinda lukewarm. This story, I’m going to show you some the wines we enjoy when I’m entertaining customers down south. Marques Casa Concha is an excellent wine that we have grown to like very much. The customers rave about it so we
give it the thumbs up!
Marques Casa Concha, in antique light!
The best beer in South America comes from Valdivia, Chile. It’s called Kuntsmann Torobayo.
We all like its amber color and great taste after getting off a long day on the river.
This one mighty fine dessert is called tres leche, it’s Nico’s favorite!
Outside the lodge the views are always spectacular!
Meanwhile my guide Martin is entertaining some of our other customers over in Argentina on the Rio Limay. Some guys have all the luck! The Anny Fam getting ready for a splendid day out on the water launch off with fly rods in hand ready for another successful outing.
The Cathedral Crags stand as fortress in the background as the guides and ladies float down the river in awe.
The fishing has been so good this year on the Rio Limay and the water is so turquoise from the snow runoff from the Cathedral Mountains outside of Bariloche.
What a fly fishing cutie!
Marron Anny caught a lunker that day and receives the SIZZLER OF THE WEEK AWARD! CONGRATULATIONS SIZZLER!! WHAT A GORGEOUS BROWN TROUT!! JACK TROUT
Mom with a great guide who will sing to you out on the water! He especially loves all those great hits from the 1980’s. Martin has to be the most entertaining guide in all of Argentina; this is why all my customers love being out with him on the rivers…He’s fun!
Lunch time is always an event! You can always expect a four course meal at least. Warm smiles from my guides means you’re welcome here anytime.
Everyone was having so much fun that day; the air was filled with summer joy!
Martin, I wouldn’t change a thing! This guy is so much fun to be around. He’s like the long lost friend you knew from school and just like Nico in Chile, he knows so much about our North American culture, movies, books and of course music! I love this guy and I am blessed that we met and are working together to entertain YOU.
The fam, after lunch. Spending time with your daughters out on a river in Patagonia Argentina….PRICELESS!!!!
My lodging in Argentina is 5 Star. Check out our site, I’m proud for what I have to offer to you!

Back to Chile, Steve is fighting a good trout on the Rio Futaleufu and I’m on the oars!
Nice rainbow Steve!
Then further down we saw all these large trout from 16 to 24 inches feeding right near the surface! Steve broke off three in a row.
Michael caught one of the biggest ones but it got caught around the willows and we never landed a single trout. These trout were pesky, they’d take a fly but knew how to dive deep or run hard and get away! I always say, sometimes you have to give praise and root for the fish, they deserve it some days.
Later on Steve landed a nice brown trout.
That night back at the ranch, the spirits ran high!
Luigi Bosca Syrah was the wine of choice with our wonderful meal.
Local flowers warmed our hearts!
Every night we offered many different wines for our customers to sample.
These are a few of what we offer when you come down to visit us. We’ll let you be the judge in 2008!
Michael was so relaxed and feeling the good vibes!
The gnocchi dinner was awesome! I love Italian food and this was no exception to the rule.
Dessert was also memorable.
The next day both groups were ready for action!
Steve continued to hook fish and laugh in utter delightment!
Steve, awesome brown trout, looks like you’re having a great week.
Another rainbow completes the day!
Two happy cigars meet two happy characters back at the resort.
Asado night is always fun with great food and a real local feel. We think it’s important for you to experience great fishing, culture an food when coming down to visit us in Patagonia. Asado night is all of that in one spectacular event!
One of my favorite all-time wines from Chile is Casino Macul, great at any meal.
This leg of lamb was so awesome, I can taste it now.. Wish I was there-then-now, I made a real pig of myself at that meal–I wonder why Sizzlers!
Cheers-Saludos!
Still hungry for cake?
Thank you for watching my adventures! It took 16 years to find places, guides and lodging like the ones I offer my customers now. It hasn’t always been easy, the road has been long and winding, but I’ve enjoyed my journey along the way. I’ve hung in when most would have given up. I stayed when I had little or few customers to pay my bills back in the United States (I never let me customers know or down in anyway). I’ve had days without prosperity, but always had a candle in my heart that kept my destiny lit, for I knew that future success was imminent for me and my customers. I will continue to have more and more success down in Chile and Argentina as my experience and knowledge has surrounded me with only the top guides and establishments. But there has been no finer hour than receiving my residency by the Chilean Government! This has been an achievement that acknowledges my love and respect for the Chilean People. After 16 years I think I deserve it; they do too!

Jack, Thanks! I am well and enjoy your web-adventures. I saw Stienstra at the San Mateo show, which was a real dud. The Sac show was much better. Harry

Hi Jack:
Don’t know if you remember our conversation last year about Patagonia, but I see from your latest update that you’re on to the dam issue. So FYI, here’s the link to the article I wrote on that trip – http://www.nrdc.org/onearth/06fal/. Feel free to link to it from your site if you think your readers/customers would be interested. You might also be interested in my book, Casting a Spell: The Bamboo Fly Rod and the American Pursuit of Perfection, which was published by Random House last summer.
I never did get to do much fishing last spring – had a day on the Nirehuao, but got sick on the other day off I’d planned.
Cheers,
George Black
Congratulations on your dual citizenship. I like your taste in wine. Hope to see you this summer, with my son Shaun this time.
