*****KLAMATH RIVER STONE FLY HATCH IN FULL SWING! ~ McCLOUD DRY FLY ACTION & UPPER SAC MORNING BITE! TRINITY LOWERS ITSELF AND GETS BETTER ~ WHILE THE PIT & HAT CREEK BUG UP!!*****
Wow! What a low water year we’re experiencing. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen so little snow on Mt Shasta, though the fly fishing has been great thus far, especially the dry fly fishing on all north state rivers. It’s like an exact opposite water year compared to last year at this time when the rivers were still raging angry like a mountain that doesn’t want it’s lava tubes tapped! The rivers are in perfect shape now until August when the hotter days move in and it’s better to approach fishing very early in the morning then take a mid-day break (i.e. siesta), then head back out from 4pm till dark. Canyons are great places to fish when the mid-day break is not an option and the heat arrives with hatches and fish taking the same shelter as you in the shaded cooler side of the river. Use size 16 & 18 flies in dries and nymphs when you look into your box for that default button. These are the more prevalent sizes seen now in our rivers. But don’t forget to bring some larger sized stones and green drakes for the- infrequent should have had in my box- pot thought. As the terrestrials move into action after the middle of July, please be advised that the beetles didn’t just make hit records. Hoppers, flying ants and damsels in distress all need your attention! My favorite flies to date are; 1. Alicia~ Silver Stone 2. Paris~ Silver Hilton (unavailable right now ~ on back order will be shipping in a couple of weeks…) 3. Sharon~ Stone ..about 20 years ago!! Jack Trout over and Out!
An osprey in flight is one of my favorite things to witness out on any of our North State rivers. It’s the sign of a healthy environment and I would go on record as to saying there is a 100% chance that there’s trout in the neighborhood! So free and high the osprey flies, gliding effortlessly on instinct, like how you learned to stand a bike upright as a child when pushing those pedals in motion, not really even thinking about it because it became a reflex. Fly on my winged friend of grace, I am only jealous that I can’t join you in your flight of sublime bliss.
Now here’s something we can all relate to, the Upper Sacramento River and a dry fly! Even just sitting on a rock can make a day a whole lot better. The colors, the smells, the sounds, all act as mind candy as the joy of late spring fills the soul- easy on the eyes! It was great that Phil Roessler, who came out from Maryland with his dad, Jim, and brother Steve could have such a magical day on the most important river California’s ever known. He loved his trip from the first trout he caught only using dry flies which he and his partners left on for the entire duration.
This spot anywhere in the world, on any continent, holds trout, and a shoreline perfect for a picnic! What a great scene indeed, kinda makes the heart pound…
Did I hear fish on Steve Roessler?
Yo welcome to Cali~ Now you all come back now ya-hear!

Phil was up and down our mountainsides like a deer. This guy can cover some water people! He was having so much fun, every time I would catch up to him he had this never ending smile and was constantly catching trout. That day he landed or had close 4 trout in or over 18 inches all on dry flies.
We have another East Coast fan of Mt Shasta. World meet Phil Roessler.
Glacial water from the peaks of Mt Shasta make their way down underground only to reveal themselves all the way down in Dunsmuir.
Phil hooks up behind Mossbrae Falls on a dry fly!
Way to go! PHILLIP ROESSLER, YOU’RE MY SIZZLER OF THE WEEK AWARD WINNER!!! CONGRATULATIONS SIZZLER!! JACK TROUT
The Roessler fam together again!
Water~ the most precious resource on earth!
Thank you Mossbrae Falls!
Red ants are busy at work, you think you have it tough.
The next day over on the McCloud River we even caught more trout!
Phil, showing off his catch, liked both the Upper Sac and the McCloud Rivers.
Father Jim got into the action a little later on.
Colors are amazing.
Thanks again for choosing our area, hope to see you again soon. jt

Mike Levinson and Nick ready for their float on the Trinity River.
Nick came along to learn fly fishing and see one of California’s most beautiful rivers and drink a few brews. First thing I taught Nick was to hold the rod in the corked section. It was his first time fly fishing and Nick was having a good time and enjoying the great views.
Your first trout! Thanks for coming up.jt
Mike Levinson is a total bro! What a fun guy to guide. Mike is a big fan of Mt Shasta and all the rivers, pubs and restaurants. We are lucky to have folks like Mike and the many friends he has brought to the area. To all who enjoy and cherish Mt Shasta, Dunsmuir and McCloud and protect it~ THANK YOU FROM ALL OF US HERE IN MT SHASTA AND SURROUNDING AREAS.
When the Santa Rosa Seniors came to town Mt Shasta put on her most revealing dress! jt
We climbed to Bunny Flats and I gave a talk on the mountains history, geology, local lore, mystic and volcanic activity etc. We were lucky to see two climbers who I interviewed for the group. And the Seniors of Santa Rosa were delighted by the presence of her majesty in all her glory as she looked down at me– I swear that she winked at me! Oh Mt Shasta, you’re a one of a kind mysterious mountain magic wonder. Why with so many other mountains in this vast mountainess planet, so much larger, higher or steeper? You’re unique in character for certain, as Joaquin Miller once said; Mt Shasta~ Lonely as a god.
The lunch at Lower Falls on the McCloud River was delicious and the weather was perfect.
After lunch I did my traditional cliff dive off the Lower Falls McCloud right stump~ 22 feet – Usual poor form judges scored 6.4 on grace.
Tiger Swallow Butterfly landed on one of the Senior’s arm. That’s bonus points for the step-on guide.
The Upper Falls is so beautiful!
We went to the McCloud Museum and saw pictures of the Hearst Castle property down in Wytoon on the McCloud River. This house was designed by Julia Morgan the first women architect in the United States. It would be great if the Hearst Corporation would get involved with the removal of Nestle Water from excavating the spring water lava tubes that feed the McCloud River’s, Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls. Being that the Hearst are huge property owners (if not the largest in the area next to the USFS) and having that famous river and those trout that “launched a thousand ships” running right through their lands, that it would be in their best interest to do so. (Hearst could fight it like how they deterred Mike Rode and the Department of Fish & Game from reintroducing Dolly Varden into the Upper McCloud River through
their property). Sometimes life isn’t fair and as of late it seems that the only the corporations, bureaus and stockholders are winning the decisions. Life hurts at times especially when the little guy like me has little resources and sees it going down before his very eyes. It’s sad when nature plays its lonely hand in a game that can never be won. jt
After our tour up to Castle Lake, McCloud & Mt Shasta we all went out to the best restaurant in Mt Shasta~
The Trinity Cafe 530-926-6200.
I love the world class meals at the Trinity Cafe in Mt Shasta~ 622 N Mt Shasta Blvd. http://www.trinitycafe.net See you there! jt

All right Howard nice trout on a hex dry!
Out on the deck at Henderson Springs life is grand. Henderson Springs Private Water Lodge and Cabin Home.~ 530-337-6917. Tell Mark Henderson you saw this story on www.mtshasta.com!4 wonderful spring fed lakes with ginormous trout and great hatches.
Chris throws his dry fly early one morning in the canyons of the Upper Sac and whamo! Fish-on!
Thanks for coming out from Massachusetts! It was a great day. jt
Nice colors.
Anyone that knows me well, knows I love to cook! I needed a huge cutting board to make pizzas and pasta on in my kitchen in Mount Shasta. I called Rodney up at the wood shop and for WAY under $100 the Mt Shasta High School Wood Shop made me this awesome 24 x 24 cutting board. You should contact your local high school wood shop and figure out what they can make for you! Not only is it a great experience for the high schoolers, your donation is greatly appreciated and needed… THANK YOU MT SHASTA HIGH SCHOOL WOOD SHOP! I LOVE MY BOARD THAT I WILL NEVER CUT ON JUST MAKE DOUGH!! JACK TROUT

Jack: Had a great time as usual, My boss, Dave randal whom we had bought the trips for really enjoyed himself. We had a good dry fly day on the McCloud and a great day drifting the lower sac. The guides were great and we were impressed with arron’s knowledge of the lower sac for such a young guy.
I’m sending you some pic’s of the lower sac. They will come in several emails. I tried to send them all at once but they wouldn’t go thru.
Looking forward to a couple of trips in the fall for steelhead.

I am seeking availability and pricing on arranging a fly fishing trip to the Pit River for the dates of August 31 and September 1. Please email me whether your guided tour group would be available during that time and what the pricing would be. This trip would be for my 22 year old son and myself. My son is an experienced fly fisherman and I am fairly new to the sport.
Thank you.

Jack–Thanks for a great Upper Sac float in May. Those were my biggest US rainbows to date. The 700 cfs flow made for great fishing AND rafting.

Great Belize shots! All the best!
Jack,
Great to talk with you last week. As I haven’t heard from my hosts, let’s book the Thursday and Friday, leaving you to do another gig on the weekend. In the meantime, if someone has a strong desire to have you stay longer, we’ll amend – if you’re not already booked.
Pls confirm, and let me know about logistics, deposit, etc.
All the best,

Oh my gosh. These pictures are stunning. The fish are stunning. Lloyd and his family are stunningly beautiful! I had no idea you were talking about paradise. I’m just numb. I can’t wait to read the rest of the story. Tracy
Hi Jack,
Sounds like you are having a good year, great shots of Belize, been ther bro… On the local scene, I plan to be in your area on June 23 & 24 with my lady.. Do you have a little spot we can fish in the area on Saturday, 6/24? Private water is o k too. She is just learning to fly cast and I want to let her see what moving water is like with a fly rod, other than the Williamson, which is danmed difficult for most fly fishers, but man do I have stories!!!. I look forward to hearing from you.
As an aside, we will be opening the Williamson River Retreat this summer and will have a large party on a date to be determined. Consider yourself invited, more specifics to follow….
